As a proud new first-time father I was thinking about a 2013 coin of some sort to put in the box of keepsakes for my daughter with baptism candle, christening gown, etc.
I was thinking a 2013 Silver Eagle, maybe a proof? Classic, timeless.
Am I missing anything? Has anyone done anything different or heard of something more unique or better?

Get the 2013 commemorative set, that's what my parents did for me (just not the 2013 one ) And congratulations!

I think a 2013 ASE is a good idea, been thinking of a similar gift for some friends with a new baby. Its a nice compact size.

congratulations on a baby daughter. I echo the replies about ASE's. Always got one from my dad every year for my birthday growing up. I decided to continue that tradition with a friend when his kid turned 1.

If you think she will be a girl scout at any point the girl scout commem seems like it could be perfect. If not the birth year sets are pretty cool or and ASE and mint set from her birth year

Congratulations! 2013 --> ASE, Panda, AGE, Silver Proof set. My kids, now 6 and 10 just love looking at coins with their birth years on them. Two years ago, anything with their birth year that was shiny and/or had a cool picture would have worked, even something like a Niagra Falls rolled Lincoln Cent. With the older one, a couple years ago the interest started to grow to include the currency aspect, silver content and market value. ASEs are their favorites now, mostly because they can handle them. Proofs to them are "blah." They can't touch them. Whenever they see a Panda though, they ask if they can get one of those.

OneBowl makes a good point. A coin they can actually touch and handle may bring more interest later.

Congratulations!
There are a lot of good suggestions here already.
I think it might be fun it you got her a 1913 coin.
My husband had that idea for my sisters' kids -- get them a set for the year they were born and then a coin that is 100 years older than they are. We never got around to doing it though. Maybe we'll have it done in time for college graduation. LOL

Congrats.
I have all boys, don't know if I could handle a daughter. I know it is not All American, but I got my boys birth year Pandas. They are in flips, not capsules , so they can take them out to hold and compare. The Pandas are not only different years, but unlike the Eagles, they are unique in design to their birth year. They are always in a fun competition as to who's birth year has the best design.

Buddy, YES YES YES!
"And when you were born, THIS coin was already 100 years old!"
A common 1913 Buffalo would be ideal. Coupled with a 2013 Eagle and I think that it will be a winning combination. Kid are fascinated by things which are old. One of my (emotional) favorites is an 1851 gold dollar, which was 100 years old when I was born.

The US mint has the birth set now as well. Not silver but something nice. The eagle is also something you can get every year.

Berk, what about the upcoming 2013 West Point ASE set? I got one of the 2012 sets for my newborn last year.

I recommend crushing down the remains of your catalytic converter down abit more and then you should pan it out. Platinum is more dense than gold which would make it easier to pan when accompanied with a magnet to remove any ferrous metals (steel and nickel). should be fun!

For finding the one silver quarter in my last bank bag, I gave my 7yo step daughter the one ounce copper round that my LCS hands out for free with their business info on it. I'm cheap, but she loved it. :D
Also, congrats!
