As my father passed recently, I inherited many hundreds of lincoln cents rolled by date and mint mark (1917-date) They appear to be in average condition (at least on the two rolls I opened) So the questions... Sell as a set, as individual coins, by the roll or hunt for varieties myself. I do have a copy of the cherry-pickers guide to US cents. I collect canadian large cents by variety and die pair already so I'm not sure I really want to open this can of worms. Any opinions, are welcome.

In my opinion unless you are planning on going through every single one for varieties or absolute gems I would sell them as rolls.

Did that set include every date in the 1917-date rolls? I would sell them by the rolls unless you are just a nut about errors. I really am not, but several people are.

Average condition? As in average circulated, or average uncirculated condition? Well either way I would just keep them, but I like pennies

I should have said "average circulated condition" any opinions as to per roll value? I takes two of us just to pick up the box they are in, I imagine there is some copper value here too.

The copper ones will at least get you above face as a lot worst case. ebay may have some completed listings for similar rolls you could check to see what theyre going for

A roll of '17D (G-F) just sold for $31.50. Pretty much a no-brainer. I'd still have to search, though.

Is there a roll of 1924s or 1922s? I would check the roll of 1955s for the double die, but other than that sell them. Rolls in the teens and twenties should go pretty good.

I would have to check some of the rolls .. like the ones Bassmaster posted.. and for 1931 S, 1970 S small date .. a whole roll of 1960 small dates would be nice .. and by chance a 1972 DDOEdit .. I would also check for any really nice 82's and 83's

Inheritance? I'd keep them if it were me.

If you do post them on ebay, let us know. I have some money I could invest toward my expanding Lincoln Wheat cent stash. :)

Hi, First of all, sorry about your father. I lost my Dad one year ago, too. As for your collection your Dad left you. GO FOR IT! If you love coins like I love coins (Esp.varieties) search through all. You said your all set with the Cherry Pickers Guide, you'll have the time of your life going through everything. Who knows, your father might have left you a "hidden gem" in all those rolls? I'm gonna guess you'll find a 1917 double die. Worth a pretty good premium.Check out the prices. I'd take my time searching while thinking of Dad at the same time. Good Luck,in whatever you decide.-joey

I too am sorry for your loss. Your father may have left you a treasure. Yes, it would be a big task going through them, but you may find many good collectible coins. I think it would honor your father's wishes to get the best out of them that you can. Just of all the time you will be thinking of your father as you go through them. Good luck with them.

That's what got me into collecting again and now I can't stop lol. Me and my dad would always collect silver coins when they were a lot easier to find in pocket change and when I was stationed in Alaska he had sent them to me. They sat in my dresser for about 2 years and I needed some extra money and sold the silver and I'm regretting doing it. That's when I started doing research and learning more about coins and errors/varieties and I'm hooked.

You say you have a roll of 1917's? Check them for the Doubled Die listed in the RedBook. I've cherrypicked two of those over the years, and even in average circulated you would get $100+ for them. Worth checking for.
