This is a rather uncommon 5 kopek despite it's low grade. Can you guess what makes this rather scarce?

The mintmark TM indicates it comes from the "Taurian mint" at Feodisia in the Crimea where, I believe, coins were only minted in the years 1787 and 1788.

In fact, IIRC there wasn't any copper mined anywhere near the mint, so it had to be shipped in from far away. Of course there weren't many coins made there The entire "mint", really, was just a stunt to ram the point home that Russia owns these lands now. It closed after two years because of obvious unprofitability.

Personally what I find it interesting is that these coins actually were struck better than coins coming out from EM or Ekaterinburg. A lot of Ekaterinburg coins that I have were not struck in collars properly so they don't end up to be circular. I would like to upgrade this coin some time down the road but I know it's not any time soon.

Starting a new thread for your coin would be appropriate, to generate more attention.

@Moley: I also posted in yuor other thread, but here goes again: "Hello Moley, Well that is indeed a nice coin. It is also MY coin.... Unfortunately left it with an ipod Nano on February 23d, in Carriage 14, seat 88 Eurostar Brussels-London when moving from Holland to London. I did not leave it in the pub. My fault, but as the coin has great sentimental value for me therefore I'd like it very much back. Just to prove I am the rightful owner I can provide mail exchanges with lost and Found Eurostar in March 2014 describing the coin, as well as the provenance: the coin was bought in 2000 in New York via ebay, from coin dealer Dmitriy (Dima) Markov. It is part of a large collection of large 5 kopeks coppers and overstrikes and as said- for various reasons I am keen to add this to my collection again. Unfortunately you have disabled the possibility to send you a mail, but I do have that possibility. Do get in touch of you read this. Thanks in advance"
