I just got a toonie in my change that I think is either fake or an error strike. The year is 2005 it has a weak strik on the reverse and off center strike on the obverse. It weighs 7.26g with the standard edges except they look strange. Will post pics later. Does anyone know the tell tale signs of those fakes that were made for the 2004 / 2005 toonies? Are people saving the counterfeits? I threw a few in the garbage. If you google counterfeit toonies there is a comparison photo

In the past year I've found 2 of these monstrosities and I've voiced my opinion on them in a couple of threads. Is the toonie really dull looking, the pearls on the queen are ultra-defined, and has a very weak sound when dropped on a table/floor? If so, these possibly came from the Montreal mill that pumped these out after 2005. I keep my examples as education devices so that others are not fooled by them.

Pictures added.
I am almost entirely certain that it is a fake. Everything about this coin is wrong. The horrible Chinese fakers would be ashamed of the workmanship here. I cannot believe they got away with milling these for so long.
What should I do with this now that I have it?

As mentioned above. Wait for SPP-Ottawa, t_y, nickelsguy to contact you. They deal with fakes lots.

I am testing every 2004 and 2005 fake twoonie that is sent to me, using the analytical equipment in my lab. In time, through collaboration with the RCMP, the intent is to publish a paper on those. Once I have tested the coins, I send them to the RCMP to be destroyed. I will gladly take it, and exchange it for a nice (real) mint state version, if you want to send it to me. Send me a PM. Quote: I keep my examples as education devices so that others are not fooled by them. You are aware, that it is illegal to possess these counterfeit coins... A fact you might not want to be sharing on a public forum...

the 2004 and 05 fakes were made in a suburb of Montreal

No doubt, this coin is a (criminal) forgery. There are many posts in this forum explaining how to differentiate and telling the whole story.
If sent to SPP, it will be XRFed and then sent to RCMP for disposal.
Note that Canadian law is very clear: it is a criminal offense to own or trade counterfeit currency.

I plainly do not wish to deceive anyone simply by having them. My intent is to educate. How can a victim be a perpetrator at the same time? Obviously I didn't make the forgery because so many people have one without even knowing it. SPP: You are breaking the law as well for offering to receive and to buy the counterfeit money, so what's the difference - really. There ought to be a limit to this law and I will not be treated like a criminal. Besides, I have an excuse. I am educated on coins and I did not wish to pass on my misfortune onto others by spending it into circulation with the intent to deceive, so I do have an excuse, as stated in this law; the burden of "proof" is on me if the coin police wish to pursue it and I can back it up with my collection and books and my posts on this forum that I know what I'm doing and I have no ill will.

See section 450 above, in particular: Quote: Every one who, without lawful justification or excuse, the proof of which lies on him. Allow me to correct you on one point. I am not breaking the law. I have 'the proof' in the form of a digital letter (email) from the RCMP Counterfeit Coordinator. I have permission to accept them, test them and then subsequently submit them to the National Anti-Counterfeiting Bureau, at RCMP Headquarters, in Ottawa. In fact, I was encouraged to collaborate with the RCMP to do exactly just that, and when I have enough data to write a journal paper, members of RCMP lab group in Ottawa will likely be co-authors. The only other person I know, who can legally accept them, along with any other Canadian counterfeit coin, is Mike Marshall.

I dont see the issue. If I came across one, I would hold onto it as well. Given the size of my collection, I dont think the RCMP would bother me. Yes there are rules and laws.....but they are not all enforced at all times...
