After five years of noodling I found my first rabbit ears last week - then found this one on the same day. It is a 2011 dollar, beautifully shiney and new with a small spear from the back of the top roo. I hope it shows in the pic. Not really ears, but perhaps how the Cud starts. I reckon that is an impression from the lump of metal on the die, it just didnt stick. It is probably attached to another coin a few strike later. I have noticed the same thing on some $1 and 10c coins but only on very lustrous coins.

Sorry to disappoint you but I just check several of my 1 dollars and they are the exact same and I have 3 2011 1 dollars that are nice the shiny and have this, so its just the design of the coin

Mmmmmm. I have 17 of the 2011 MOR. I found one other with the same spur. So that makes two out of the 17.

Yes - where the rabbit ears normally is. Here is a pic of the second one I found. Much more distinct.

Quote: I reckon that is an impression from the lump of metal on the die, it just didn't stick. It is probably attached to another coin a few strike later. I'd go so far as to say it's a developmental stage of the formation of a Rabbit ear. Eventually, the lump of metal breaks off the die, and all coins minted after that with the same die will have a rabbit ear. Is there a sort of super shiny area above, below or around the 'spear'? If there is, that shiny area would indicate the minimum size of the Cud that might eventuate when the lump of metal breaks off the die.

I cannot see any evidence of shading on either coin. These two pictured came from the same till so are from the same die run. My guess is this is the very start of ears. Who knows how quickly it was picked up at the mint. The dear lady at the lunch shop always gives me dollars in my change and she knows to pick the 2013 shiney ones! !

Sorry correction. The pictured coins are 2013. Not 2011 as stated previously.
