A new coin for me, in "used" condition - but I think it has character. I like this coin. It was used during a time of European upheaval, revolutions and general unrest.

I like it. I also think it illustrates a perception that I have had for some time: that being; a well "aged" and circulated coin often has more appeal than a high grade MS example.

A nicely patinated EF example of an early machine made silver crown sized coin.

Agree with that "circulated coin often has more appeal than a high grade MS example".
I love this design so I bought one more of this coin of the same year. It will be a good souvenir to those collectors and non-collectors as well as the history behind is fascinating. The liberty head nearly occupies the whole surface of the coin, it is seldom to see others like that. I always wonder why there is a star over the head.

I can't see your image, but I'm assuming it's a Ceres head. I've gotten interested in French coinage in general. Scarcity is the rule rather than the exception, though when something great shows up on ebay the whole world knows about it. I've been in some ferocious bidding battles over Louis XVIII and Charles X 2 franc pieces. Considering that for many of these coins there are less than 10 in existence the prices are still remarkably low.

Hi - it might be that you are trying to view this page from your work? I have the same problem - if a picture is hosted of site (which mine is) I can't view it because of the restrictions. I am on the lookout for a Charles X 5 franc - I should be able to pick one up for about £60 or so I think, and I do have a Louis XVIII 5 franc that I think is quite nice - a little way down the page here http://www.diadumenian.com/Congress...0crowns.htmlOf course our collecting goals are different - I just want a crown sized portrait coin for each ruler, hopefully in nice condition, but I'm happy with the most common date. Best of luck with your search...

I've been in some ferocious bidding battles over Louis XVIII and Charles X 2 franc pieces. Unlike the 5 Francs coins, which were often kept as 'savings', the 2 and 1 francs (and silver 50cts) have been circulating intensively. Hence poor grades are widespread and the price curve is steep for those wanting a VF+ or XF coin. French coins typically sell for less on the french e-bay. Having them sent over from France is an option if the expedition costs are not prohibitive.

The most ferocious bidding on 2F's I've seen lately was on a group of about 30 that showed up on US ebay about 2 years ago. They were the almost all from the small branch mints, all Napoleon/Louis XVIII/Charles X, in mostly TB grades. They started at low minimums, and all sold in the $75-$200 per coin range. It took all my bidding tricks to get three of them. These are coins that rarely show up in cgb.fr's auctions, and never in their fixed price lists. I have seen a few of the 2F coins on French ebay, but in general the better coins have been on the US site, and except for the sale noted usually as single pieces in B condition and/or the common dates. The 5F Ceres image is now showing up. Nice coin to have! I've picked up BB Strasbourg and K Bordeaux 5F's from this period, and have also managed to get examples of the slightly rare 1850K 1F, and the K mint 20 and 50 centimes. The dream coin is a K mint 2F...

I've never looked through cgb.fr's inventory for anything other than ancients. They always had some nice coins - but were really, really expensive.
I can see how France's 19th century lower denominations, which did all the work, would command a huge premium in high grades. I've tended to overlook France in my world coin collecting - not sure why - they have some fantastic designs.

Here is my latest find of French coins on ebay. Coin is pretty worn but it is an extremely rare variety. The dies have been mixed up. Front die is from KM#735 while reverse is KM#744. Has been offered as buy it know and I was very happy to have seen it first...

Not very many of those around maudry. Despite all the reverse wear the mint marks shows, which is nice. My last good ebay pick was a 1830L 5F in TB. The coins show up, just not that often, and there are always bidders for the better ones.
