Hello Everyone,
I purchased several coins at Saturdays auction. I would like your opinion of a grade on the coins and a value. Would like to see if I overpaid, underpaid, or did good. Any and all help is appreciated. I have posted pictures in my album: LeAnn "May 5 Auction". Sorry these are scans of the coins, I have no camera to take pictures. Just a rough idea would be helpful. Tried to post pics here but have not figured out how to get them from album to post. Any info and help is greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU,
LeAnn

LeAnn, congratulations on your wins. I hope you enjoyed yourself at the auction.

The ANI slabs do not have any significance to me--I'd compare them to the MS-65 price in the Red Book for value.

The Barbers appear to be in the AG-VG range, which is where I collect as well.

Scanning really does proofs no good at all, IMO.

Here's a general tip:
The image gallery automatically reduces each image to 800 pixels maximum in its largest dimension. So assuming you scanned your coins at greater than 600x800, you are losing detail by not cropping the images. Use paint or some other application to crop your images (exclude empty white space) and then upload them again (by replacing the images, if you like). I'll bet we'll get a much better look at your coins then.

Thanks Texasmick, I'll try that, and Yes I did have a good time. Coins went a lot higher than I thought they would.
LeAnn

Got a few closer pictures for everyone to look at. The mint set I did not make it larger. It's in the original package and envelope from Philadelphia.

Alright, I haven't gone through them all yet, but here's an early impression:

The reverse of the 2x2's have letters/codes like F and VF. I really don't think these are correct grades, if that is what was intended. A fine Barber will have all the letters in LIBERTY legible; a very fine will have a bold LIBERTY that should be legible even in these scans. The quarters look like VG's to me. Except the 14, which is a cull because of the deep scratches.

The 08-S is most definely not fine, as the reverse rim and USofA and denomination aren't complete. It also has facial scratches--call it an AG. I believe the 08 half might actually be a fine--if all letters in LIBERTY are visible.

The letters on the back of the 2x2's were there when I received the coins. I have no idea if it was the auction employees or the owner of the coins. I knew the 08-s was not fine with the way the back is smooth in sections.
The things I did not like about the auction, was they grouped several coins together and top bid got choice. Not really fair when each coin was listed separately, should have sold separately. The other thing I did not like was the advertisement said coins sell at 1:00, I got there about 11:05 to have a look at the coins, and they started bidding right after I got there. Less than 5 minutes. By 1:00 we were done with the coins. Not fair to the guy that showed up at 1:00 to bid on coins.

I must warn anyone who visits a coin auction. The auctioneers are there to make money and they know coins will bring in people, people who know nothing about grading. Not all people, but most don't.

The auctioneers usually never display there best grading skills, but rather their liberal side.

It seems an auction's name like Long Beach draws more people than the coins themselves. So be careful not to bid against others just to win an item. Because you will eventually pay more than the coins are worth.

I'm not saying auctioneers are crooked, but many fall under the desguise that grading is an opinion and is too subjective to say their skills don't compare to the third party grading companies like PCGS or NGC.

I say again, auctions or auctioneers are not crooked all across the board, but just to be careful when bidding frenzy begins and always pay the value of a grade or two lower than the 2x2 or auctioneers claims.
