In my endless search for the perfect coin storage solution, I've recently begun putting some of my collection into Dansco albums with the anticorrosive slip covers. These include Indian Head cents, Half Dimes, Seated Liberty dimes, Nickels, Barber dimes, and Walking Liberty half dollars. The coins and albums are stored in safe with a large can of silica desicant. Still, I'm concerned about the paper from the albums reacting with the coins and causing toning to occur. Is this something I need to be concerned about given the environmental conditions the coins are stored in, or will my coins remain free of toning?

Are you stalking me? I've heard no anecdotes at all about Dansco albums causing toning. Although the tinfoil-hat types swear by Interecpt Shield stuff, Dansco has had such a large market penetration for so long that the evidence against them would have been proven long ago if it existed. You'll be fine.

I have a total of 18 Dansco Albums, and have yet to see any change on any one single coin. And, too, I should think, with all the precautions you have in place, toning is not something that should keep you up at night. Just my 2 cents worth - Ralph

I have been using dansco albums for years, if there were problems with there albums you can be assured we would have heard about it by now. Your environment does have alot to do with toning however in a safe with silica desicant there should be no problem.

My BU/AU Jeffersons are in a Dansco. There is toning occurring. Even my 2006 coins have started to tone.
I suspect humidity is a large part of the cause for the toning, but the album is involved too, because coins I have in flips aren't doing it. I picked up a slipcase for it to see if it helps.

Any other thoughts on the topic? I'm still undecided on what to do. I may move the uncirculated coins in my Dansco albums into Intercept Shield 2x2s.

I have proof positive that my Dansco 7070 has toned several of my coins. But, I'm not complaining. It actually has done some gorgeous toning over the years, especially on nickel and brighter silver.

Not sure about Dansco but from many, many dealers and collectors I know there is nothing about those albums having an effect on coins. I use Whitman Classic Albums and have over 100 of them in all denominations. I do not use a safe, just a wooden shelved storage cabinet. Each Album is in a plastic freezer type bag. NO silica gels stuff, just a great electrical dehumidifier. I've been collecting since about 1943 and I have never seen any effects on any of my coins yet of course that is not to say in another few humdred years they may start to tone. I would suggest you invest in a dehumidifier if your worried about moisture. I did an experiment in my basement taking reading with a hygrometer. I noticed the dehumidifier kept the moisture down to about 20% and at times 25%. I shut it off, purchased 12 large silica gel packs, hung them all over the place and the humidity went up to well over 35% to 40% within a day. On very humid days outside my basement went up to 45%. I turned on the dehumidifier, threw out the silly gel packs and now back to about 20% in a little over 2 days.

Why not try the Intercept Shield Albums?

Well, I'd rather not spend the money if I don't have to. Also, Intercept Shield doesn't have the same kind of selection that Dansco does.

If your coins are in Dansco albums, leave them alone. You will be 300 years old before the albums effect the coins.

I have switched to the Dansco albums as my Whitman "paperbacks" stuck to several of my coins...once again I blame it on humidity over the last 30 years but I am pretty confident that my coins won't stick to the double sided plastic a Dansco offers! LOL
