... that is the question. I want to make a complete (minus variations) Eisenhower Unc/Prf set in a Whitman Album for my Grandson. The question... should I crack my Brown Ike's and remove my Blue Ike's from the original packaging to do this? I respect the advice from the Ike fans on this site... -- I'm not so interested in value as I am in having a consolidated collection. The Brown/Blue Ikes's are tucked away and get looked at occassionaly. Any thoughts or better ideas?

I have a set that will remain in the packaging. I have to have one complete OGP set. So if that is your only set, I would say buy another set and remove those for the folder. And I say that not based on value, but the collector in me wanting the OGP set.

I've thought about that and that's precisely where I'm torn on this. The 'collector' in me wants to keep the sets the way there were intended. The 'coin lover' wants to see them and have them accessable in total...

Agree with smoke, if you want both get another set to crack. For what its worth you could put it back in the brown boxes I dont think you have to destroy that to get it out

You can easily buying the already cracked coins to put them in the album. Many coin show will have at least a hand full of dealers have these available so you can look through and pick the best.... this was how I end up having a few spare one that I've set aside for future possible trading with fellow CCFers.

I recently traded with another CCF member for a blue Ike. I was intent on cracking it out... until I got it in hand. Now its a lot harder to do after seeing it packaged this way. For the cost, I think I am just going to buy a loose one - they are not that expensive.

Earle... I know exactly what you mean. One of my Blue Ike's (1972) I got as a kid (my first mint coin) and won't break that seal.

Take a junk Ike and put a sticky label on it referring to the Brown Ike. Use the junk coin as a placeholder in the book.
This is what I do when I consider a slabbed coin or proof set coin as a hole filler. You have the real coin that fills the void, it just doesn't live in that book.

Individual 40% Ikes (removed from their OGP) are widely available. I did crack out one '72 Brown Ike, because the box was squashed, the lens was cracked, the coin is a blast-white beauty , and I got it for melt value anyway!

Quote: Individual 40% Ikes (removed from their OGP) are widely available. Think about this. I'm not much a fan of Moderns, and you'll rarely hear me call one "collectible," but Brown Ike's in OGP are one issue I can see becoming worthy simply because so many are being cracked.

crack it. crack it with extreme prejudice. if you want a collectible brown pack ike, either get one that is extremely rare to begin with (like one with President Nixon's signature on the box), or buy an unopened blue case of brown packs.
I see no reason to keep any coin from this period in its original packaging. If its a high grade piece- it will only deteriorate if kept in it.

Quote: Brown Ike's in OGP are one issue I can see becoming worthy simply because so many are being cracked. If the packing and the coin are like new: keeper! Ambient humidity/acidity can be a factor regarding keeping them in OGP or not. Remember broken-coin's 2009 Proof Cents that rainbow toned in only three years? Unfortunately, Brown Ikes tend to get hazy after decades in OGP & humid conditions, and I've seen my fair share of melt-value Brown Ikes so affected. (in fact, the "stepped-on" '72 was the only blast-white, untoned, unhazed Brown Ike I ever got for melt value!)
