I recently won at auction an ancient base gold stater of the Durotriges of Southern England.
It was struck at about 55 - 50 BC, in pre Roman Britain.
The hammer price? 280 Australian dollars.

Are you looking for the coin for intrinsic value, or as an investment? If it's something you want and will enjoy, go for it. If it's an investment you'll have to be very careful about what you buy. Gold prices and gold coin numismatic prices are volitile at higher grades. It's very likely the lower-end gold coin you buy today won't appreciate.

@miket: Noble Numismatics auction, Sydney.
Sale 102, sixth session, lot 1684 (illustrated) ex Robert Rossini Collection.
I bid $330 for it, but got it for $275, plus buyer's commission.
Almost all lots sold, about $3 million realised.

Have a look for them on the web, if interested.

You should be able to find some 1 dollar gold pieces at or under $200 all day long. At the current price of gold, probably smart to buy a bar or something that doesn't carry a premium.

The hardest part of being a coin collector is to remain patient. Every time I get fixed on a particular coin, I remind myself that that coin has been around for a long time and there will be others... most of the time it doesn't work, but eh!

Are you looking at BIN prices, or actual actions that have sold? After looking at the gold $1 pieces in the SOLD category, there appear to be several hundred that have auctioned for well under $200. These are not holed, damaged, or junk coins, but most of them show some genuine wear.

Your original post asked if you could buy a gold US coin for under $300. You should be able to find MS $1 gold coins all day on ebay, for that price. This is clearly possible. The last dollar coin I bought was an 1853 in AU58 slabbed for $185.

If you pick something up, please share :D.
