Description:

The Capped Bust Half Dimes were produced using the close collar technology implemented by the Mint in the late 1820s. Earlier coins were edged prior to the obverse/ reverse striking, but the close collar (essentially an edge die) eliminated this step, imparting the edge reeding as part of the striking process. The close collar also limited the outward spread of metal during striking, creating not only a uniform diameter to the finished coins, but generally improving the device impressions; metal constrained from flowing outward more completely flowed into the details of the design features. The close collar also produced a raised protective rim around the beads or dentils along the circumference, and enabled the minting of proof coins with higher quality details and polished surfaces.
On the obverse Liberty faces left, wearing a softly folded mobcap (a woman's headdress of the time) with the word LIBERTY around the base. Long curled hair extends from under the edge of the cap along the front and sides, and cascades down the neck and over the shoulder. Folded drapery wraps around the neck and down and across the bust, and is secured by a clasp above the shoulder. Thirteen six-point stars are arranged on both sides of Liberty, seven to the left and six to the right, all inside the beaded or dentilled border that is inside the raised smooth rim. The date is at the bottom.
The reverse displays a centered eagle, wings partially raised, clutching an olive branch in the right claw and three arrows in the left. A shield is placed over the body of the eagle, and a concentric banner folded backward at the ends, displaying E PLURIBUS UNUM, is above the eagle. The denomination 5 C. is at the bottom. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA follows along the top three-fourths of the coin inside the beads or dentils that are placed next to a raised smooth rim. All coins were minted at Philadelphia and display no mintmark.
This new design of 1829 was the first to have the denomination placed on the coin, expressed as "5 C. This was also the first time the eagle on the reverse was adorned with a shield.
Circulation strike Capped Bust Half Dimes are relatively plentiful in census/ population reports, though specific varieties are scarce or rare. A few prooflike examples have been certified. Prices are modest up to near-Gem, becoming expensive as Gem or finer. The 1834 3 over inverted 3, 1836 3 over inverted 3, and 1837 Small 5C have modest premiums over other dates, increasing by factors of two or more as Choice Uncirculated or finer. Very few proof coins have been certified, including some with cameo designations. All proof examples are expensive even at lower grades, but very expensive as Select Proof or finer. There are minor price variations from year to year but no proof issue is markedly more or less expensive than any of the other dates in the series.

1829 LM-1Common R2

Description Of Selcted Coin
1829 H10C V-7, LM-1, R.2. Reiver state a. MS62 NGC.

Light silver gray and pleasing for the grade with minimal signs of handling in the fields or on the devices. There are flecks of gold and russet near the devices, with luster in the fields. The strike is very sharp and there is no sign of the later die clashing found over the date. An available die marriage, and thought to be one of the first struck in early 1829 as Half Dime coinage resumed after a 23 year hiatus. The reverse has three pale gules in the shield, but these are somewhat poorly defined by the strike, as normally seen on this variety

Light golden-gray in color and attractive for the grade. There are no surface problems worthy of note, and the strike is sharp. No die clashing under the left wing of the eagle and without the obverse die crack through the B of LIBERTY. A common die marriage and one of the more available issues from 1829. This is one of just three varieties having a feature known as "three pale gules." On the reverse, each vertical stripe (known as a gule), has three individual lines (known as a pale). A satiny Gem with reflective obverse fields and frosty reverse fields. Both sides have gorgeous pale green and iridescent toning with considerable light gold color on the reverse. Sharply struck and highly appealing.

The digit 1 in the date is doubled at the top, and there is an extra half-dentil between stars 9 and 10. On the reverse the E in STATES is sharply lower than the second T. Lush aquamarine peripheral coloration envelops both sides, while the obverse and reverse centers offer rose-gray patina. Despite the moderately deep toning, vibrant luster emerges unimpeded from beneath. A minor pinscratch extends just above and behind Liberty's head

General Information for This LM Number
This single obverse die was used with six different reverse dies to strike varieties LM-5, 6, 10, 15, 17, and 18. Of these, only LM-5 is common. Identification of this obverse is simple, with the top of the digit 1 in the date sharply recut above. The reverse of this scarce variety has the tops of UN joined with the right top of you slightly higher than the left top of N

Description of Selected Coin
1829 H10C MS63 Prooflike NGC. V-5, LM-6.3, R.4.. This example represents the latest remarriage of the LM-6 variety, struck between LM-8 and LM-7.3. The obverse has a prominent vertical die crack from Liberty's cap down to the drapery. The reverse has several small cracks, chips, and rim breaks. Both sides have fully prooflike fields with wisps of heather and golden-brown toning. Although a few light hairlines and other abrasions are noted, the overall eye appeal is excellent. Although we don't consider this to be a proof example, it possesses many of the characteristics seen on such coins

On the obverse, the right base of the 1 is close to the 8, and the upper loop of the 8 is close to the 2. The left edge of the 2 is over a space between dentils. The neck of the 2 is not curved. A dentil is centered below the left edge of the upright of the 1. On the reverse, NIT are joined and the D is low. RI are close, and an extra top serif of the C in AMERICA appears between the C and A. The flag of the 5 is halfway under the arrow feather.

Description of Selected Coin
1829 H10C MS67 NGC. V-11, LM-9, R.5.

This piece has splendid, prooflike original silver-gray fields with radiant luster and lots of eye appeal. There is as yet none of the die chipping that would later afflict the reverse die, in line with the prooflikeness apparent on both sides. The strike is bold, although there is minor softness around the shield border

1829 H10C V-18, LM-11, R-5. AU53 NGC.
Early die state for this variety. Light silver in color with traces of luster in the fields and boldly struck devices. Identifiable by a minor planchet streak through IB to the clasp on Liberty, and on the reverse through the olive leaves. Faint pin lines in the lower right obverse field fail to detract. An early die state struck before the obverse cracks formed to stars four and thirteen, and before the die chip appeared in the N in UNITED.

Description of Selected Coin

1829 H10C V-14, LM-16.2, R.2. Reiver state a.--Obverse Scratched--NCS. AU Details.

The obverse has an old scratch through the lower portion of Liberty's neck and into the left field, and the color is rather somber and dark. The surfaces are slightly porous as though this coin was buried or perhaps had a brief encounter with a blow torch. On the reverse the toning is acetylene yellow and burnt orange on the left with darker gray on the right. Early die state before the obverse cracks appear through many of the stars

1829 LM-18 Rare R5

Description of Selected Coin

1829 H10C V-1, LM-18, R.5. Reiver state c. VF25 NGC.

Dark gray and attractive for the grade. Identifiable by a minor scratch behind Liberty's head which touches the eighth star, her cap, then angles straight to the field between stars ten and eleven.

On this die pairing, the obverse has been mated with five prior reverse dies and the reverse has been paired with three other obverses. Both dies were retired after this variety was struck. The obverse die state has advanced with a minor die crack down through the I to Liberty's cheek and neck, faint die cracks are seen connecting stars one through six, a heavier crack seen on previous marriages connects stars three and four to the rim, and this crack now shows a lump above star four. On the reverse, the lower portion of the F in OF is filled
