A dealer, Jerry, I buy from regularly is sending me two 20 cent pieces for me to inspect in hand before I decide which one to buy. Both are slabbed, one PCGS, one NGC. Both are graded AU-58. The price difference between the two is not enough to be a factor in the decision. I am already leaning toward one over the other but I thought I'd ask the members here what they think about the two. I was told the pictures are pretty much what they actually look like in hand and both exhibit mint luster which doesn't show well in the images. That's pretty much why I want to examine them in hand, to see the luster and actual eye appeal looking at them in the flesh so to speak. So, here they are in no particular order as to preference. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Ed ANA LM-3175

The spotty toning on the PCGS coin detracts from the overall appearance of the coin and would bother me every time I looked at it.
If both coins are accurately graded (hard to tell from the small pics) I would go with the NGC coin although the market seems to think PCGS slabs are worth more.

IMO...I don't like the black marks on the first coin, but I prefer it to the second.
I like the coloring of the first, especially the obverse; but the second strikes me as too varying in color.
I don't like how the "twenty" in the first is not seen well, but it probably looks better in hand.
So, if I had a choice, I'd go for the first coin.
Just IMHO, of course.

Overall I like the PCGS obverse the best, and the NGC reverse a little better. I'm not crazy about either reverse though. Out of all of the images I like the PCGS obverse the best so I would personally pick that one

For total eye appeal, the second trumps the first.

I like the second one a little bit more than than the first because the first one appears to have a scratch by the phrygian cap and grease filled reverse lettering.

IMHO, I'd wait or spend a little extra dough to get some original toning. An AU58 should have virtually solid original mint luster in the fields. I'd grade both closer to AU50 myself.

If I had to pick I would go for the second one. The dark spots on the PCGS coin would get to me.

Both look pretty similar. I'd have to see them in hand and I'd probably like the one with the nicest luster.

Based only on the images, I like the eye appeal of the NGC specimen better. The PCGS coin is spotty, and the gouge (or whatever it is) above the cap jumped out at me instantly.

I guess I am the only one that is different because I like the look of the top one over the second one. I don't like the Obverse of the second one at all and I can definitely live with the few dark spots over the overall look of the second one

The dilema is that a camera will capture and enhance things on a coin which otherwise would not be distracting when looking at it in hand. Based on the photos alone I am slightly inclined to go with the NGC piece but then there's something about the PCGS coin I just like too. I have bought quite a few coins from this dealer and I was hoping to see them at a coin show in Sacramento this weekend but he could only be there yesterday and I work too far away to have gone over there after work. He suggested if I paid postage both ways he would send them to me to inspect in hand. A very reasonable proposition as he always discounts the coins I buy and unless I pick them up at a coin show he sends them postpaid. I don't know anyone else who does that. If I decide I don't like either I am not obligated to buy either one and there's other Liberty Seated coins he has I would be very happy to own. Ed ANA LM-3175

I think I'd go for seeing them both in hand first, then, if you have that opportunity. I looked at them both, couldn't decide, read all the comments, and changed my mind three times before I got to the end of the thread! I think though without seeing the luster in person I liked the second one better.

I'll weigh in and say not contest. I would pick the second one. The first has extremely weak lettering on the reverse, black spots of toning that detract from eye appeal and a major scratch above liberty's head. When you get them in hand, if you start to think it may be a close call, send them both back IMHO.
