F15/VF20 1870 25cents have plenty of weak strikes and convex reverses. This coin is suffers from both. IMO not a collectible coin as there are plenty of problem free exmples available.

A bit difficult to grade this one. I would go with a split grading, despite what Sheldon says. Obv.: Some of the hair detail on Vikki is gone, and is starting to wear flat. F12. Rev.: Looks like a Struck Through Grease. High points on the leaves and crown have survived quite well. Can't grade the 'CENTS' area, because mostly, it ain't there. However, VF25.

I agree with all of your assessments... was thinking F-12, max F-15 myself... Apparently someone at PCGS saw this coin as being worthy of higher grade... cameron93

I don't have any knowledge about quality of strike like some of you here,... but just look at all of the remaining detail in the leaves. ..and the remaining detail in her crown.
Yes..the center Reverse is weak,..and that seems to be a flaw from that year,.."but it's great piece to me"..
Crappy heating in 1870...no electricity in 1870 ,...a heck of a life by our present standards ,...and still this great vicky piece survives...

What's with all the mumbo-jumbo about no electricity in the 1870's... Sure it's great that coins from that era survived... but does nothing to contribute to the topic... Glad you think "it's great piece"... Point of the exercise is to show that "professional" 3rd party graders are no more accurate or consistent than any experienced collector... cameron93

Cameron - I agree with your thoughts, likely F12, maybe F15.

My opinion? I am still not happy with PCGS VF30. Nevertheless, I have learned something from this thread, especially from DBM.

PS:
It would be real nice to see some more of our more vocal "valued members" put their money where their keyboards are and become "valued financial supporters"...
If you're a regular user of the forum and get a lot of enjoyment from being a member how about buckin' up at least the minimum $5 a month to contribute to the costs of running this fantastic site...

There are other ways to be a supporter. Some members send in coins directly to the Forum moderator, for the CCF booth at the ANA and FUN shows - prizes for kids. Other members, like nickelsguy contributes use of images and photography, such as Canadian counterfeit coins. Yet some others, prefer not to be acknowledged as a supporter publicly... I would argue that any 'young numismatist' should NOT have to be a financial supporter - a good part of the reason why I even participate on a site like this, is for sharing information for their benefit.

SPP - I totally agree with you in regards to Quote: 'young numismatist' should NOT have to be a financial supporter I was thinking more of the members who like to show off their wealth by continuously posting pictures of their high-grade valuable coins...

How can a coin like that be graded at all----It is missing details completely. I am totally confused now. Is it a AU coin--down graded because of missing details?
