Opinions on this coin?
I'm surprised/disappointed to see that it has no colour or gilding and that it's a close-up of the two ships engaging in battle. It appears to be very detailed but the zoomed design takes away from scale of the ships.
Rationally, I understand that it's a large numismatic coin but my gut is turning over paying $100/oz. Any thoughts?

CC-Ottawa, where we can see this coin? It is not on the Mint site yes, suppose to be tomorrow, I think.

Based on all of the previous 5oz (non penny/SML), they are all very detailed. They probably chose the scene to show more detail of action. If they zoomed out, there would be a lot of unused space. Either way, I am done paying 500 for 5oz after buying the penny and the SML 5oz. With spot low right now, you can get a 10oz kook for less then 300.

Quote: where we can see this coin? I believe the MC members with reps receive a preview email the day prior to regular MC release on the website. I have not previously purchased a 5 oz coin but I am interested in this one because of the subject matter. Looking forward to seeing it myself - could be another one that looks better in hand than the RCM illustrative image.

Taro we are on the same page. I bought the penny and the SML too and while they are nice coins, the $500 is a tough pill to swallow.
I like history and I own most of the ship related Ag coins issued by the mint but the design on this one leaves me flat. I guess I was expecting something more unique given that the last 5oz was the first w/ colour and the new 1 kilo Ag ML is the first gilded.

Ah....a photo of the coin emerges on the "other" forum. Here is a photo of a painting: I assume on the coin we are viewing the ships from bow to stern and the USS Chesapeake is on the left (heavily damaged) and the HMS Shannon is on the right - although the the top of the coin reads the Shannon on the left and the Chesapeake on the right. If someone was looking at the coin without a knowledge of history they would likely assume that the ship pictured is the one under the name. It makes sense though to list the British ship first since it is a Canadian coin. I do like it and will add it to my collection.

Good eye canuck1us. It does appear that the coin is showing the bows of the ships with the port side of the Chesapeake and the starboard of the Shannon. I'm guessing that this coin won't be very popular in the US. Despite the differing views on the war of 1812, I don't think even revisionist historians can dispute the outcome of this battle.

My first 5 oz was the Farewell to the penny. This will be the second. This isn't one of the formats I collect all examples of. Wasn't the last one that came out (the Queen) $25 more than this one? If so, nice to see not all prices going up.

going to past on this 5 oz. a large version of the shannon toonie design in my opinion would have been a better choice.

The only thing that might sway me is the obverse. It appears to be the unique part of this coin but displaying the Queen's portrait floating on water seems just a little bit creepy. Still, if I do get one, I'll probably wait to pick it up from the dealer at a discount. Thanks all for talking me down from the ledge...at least for now

I ordered one. It appears to have great detail. I can't wait to read the description for it tomorrow. the obverse looks intriguing. I'm thinking it will be sold out by tomorrow like the last 5oz.
I waited until the next day to decide on the queen and it was to late,,, fortunately my rep located me one a couple weeks later.

The coin is already on ebay, as a "Pre-sale" http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-oz-Fine-S...em4854e2f4a8This is interesting: take a look at the "waves" on the obverse - I didn't see this specific kind of finish previously. Added: 4 coins available for the same seller. Really, people like to use the formula: just buy something and resell it for higher price.

I can't pull the trigger on $500 for this piece. I do like the mintage of only 1500.

Well, if you're going to pay $100 and oz, at least some scarcity is nice.

I don't see it on the RCM site. I'm a MC member..... Is it only available to the "Elite MC" for now? I am interested to see the design..... but probably won't buy it (because of cost, even though I like the history part & the navy theme).
