http://www.ebay.com/itm/1864-Indian...em19dbcb93ebI believe this coin is fake, but I think it is going to fool a lot of people. I have a hard time finding things wrong with it. My main complaint is that the reverse shield lines don't look good enough to me. All the mottos, date/letter styles, etc are all within reasonable tolerance. Positioning looks right. Surfaces look okay and color looks about correct for a proof from that era. I almost wanna buy it just to be sure. The seller with zero feedback doesn't help, but this coin has me wondering.

Interesting. With these low bids so far? Not sure if a proof? Need some other IHC people to advise ASAP.

After I've entered the thread, I went strait to the auction and saw the pics, before reading what you have to say.
The lines at the top of the shield was the only thing that looked like it might not be right.
I'm not sure if it's fake or not, but without looking for clues, I would probably consider it genuine.

The surface appears granular to me; particularly so, the Indian's cheek, akin to an acne condition. Also, I suspect that it's been recolored. Note that there's a speck of gold on the T in CENT, matching the peripheral color. If it is a genuine 1864 proof, why wouldn't the seller put it in a respected TPG slab? All-in-all, I'd stay away from this one. IMHO, Hesgut, trust your instinct that initiated this posting.

It looks like a dipped-n'-stripped business strike with surface problems.

Looks good to me. Definitely re-colored after a cleaning.

I don't know a lot about proof Indian cents but I kind of doubt it. Looks pretty nice other than that but since it's the first thing the seller sold on ebayI wouldn't give it a second thought. Doesn't make sense = red flag.

Cleaned and impaired. The toning ain't possible (to me) on an original coin. The seller has no Feedback, and is all of a sudden throwing nice Indian Heads onto ebay. Who was he before, and if he wasn't, did he actually just hear about ebay in the last 3 days? I'm sorry; this time I'm gonna be a spectator in the Coliseum. For some silly reason, there's never a lack of people who wish to fight on the floor regardless of the odds. Let the worst of the trolls self-immolate with the worst of the clueless buyers, and Darwin's will be served while clearing the field for the rest of us. It hurts, but you can't save them all.

First off, I'm not buying the coin, but I have changed my mind in thinking it's fake. I think it is real. I didn't even look to see if the seller has listed any other coins before I made this thread. Some of those other coins look okay to me and the grading is pretty conservative. He calls all those other pieces AU. The good ones might be AU-58, but they are pretty sharp and most ebay sellers would call those BU, and they indeed, might "market grade" low BU. The seller doesn't seem like an outright scammer. The coin in question may be cleaned recolored. I see reason for concern, especially with what exoguy said with regards to the unusual speck of gold. I don't know for sure it's a proof. If it isn't, then it is definitely suspect color. The proof IHC "nicks" do kind of look like that though. If it was a later proof or business strike, I'd say no, but if this is a CN 1864 proof, the color could be possible. I don't know. btw, I also don't know who superdave is referring to as the "trolls". In "forum land" trolls are always people trying to push an agenda or start an argument, often without revealing who they are. Since that doesn't apply to this thread and since you are clearly referring buyers of this coin separately, I am confused at your statement.

There appears to be light parallel rub marks above the E in ONE on the reverse. To me, it looks like this coin was both dipped and rubbed, not necessarily at the same time.

Yeah, coin looks like a polished business strike that was colored. The letters ONE CENT definitely show smoothness and shines like it was buffed or polished. Someone paid way way too much for this coin. Could be a slab crackout artist.

It's one of the reasons I have only purchased coins I can examine in-person.
