Great story! Too bad about the extensive water damage although it appears that most of the value is in the silver content of the coins. I wish that someday I will find something like this!

Yes, I have to agree, the notes appear to be too far gone to be salvageable. We'll see what the owner does with them.

Wow! You hear about people finding coin hoards with a metal detector, but not in a closet. Maybe he will come to CCF to ask about his finds.

What a crappy spot for coins and banknotes. Why do people store them in places like that?.

Very cool and very sad at the same time. Wonder what my wife is going to think when I start pulling up floor boards looking for treasure in our home?

Condensation and flooding can be a problem with long forgotten floor safes.
The location and installation of them can sometimes cause problems, as we see here.

For us all: Think about location of your own safe, in relation to this story, especially if your safe is located low down, for instance, in a cellar area.

This is not the first time I have seen documents mildewed and stained, and metals tarnished.

Good thing Grandma's gone. Seeing her hoard end up like this would've killed her.

I'm wondering what the vault for that safe was constructed from. For water (there's more than moisture going on there) to get into their, it means that the vault was not airtight. It looked from the pictures like some relatively new sets (1987 silver proof set and a 1990's ASE). That would have been a very neat find and a whole lot better if the vault didn't leak!!

Amazing find!

I live in an older house now. The previous owner was a gentleman who's wife died 10 yrs prior and he lived alone till his passing. I sometimes wonder...
