Howdy all-

Another recent ebay purchase I wanted to show off, both for grading purposes and just because I think it looks neat:

1929-Newfoundland-Cent--Interesting-Planchet,-But-Is-It-XF?

1929-Newfoundland-Cent--Interesting-Planchet,-But-Is-It-XF?

This is one of those cases where I knew I was probably paying too much and then secretly hoped it would magically show up in better condition than it really was. I'm hoping this still pulls an XF, but somehow I doubt it. The strike is not very strong to begin with and the rim dings/irregularities didn't register with me while I was bidding. Still and all, I really like the eye appeal, and the condition (whatever it may be) fits right in with my collection.

Any opinions?

cheers,
tbg

Thanks! The 2013 Krause catalog lists F $2.50, VF $3.50, XF $7.00, though it seems ebay is running high on most of the Canadian-ish items I've been looking at recently. This cost me $13.39 w/o shipping- more than a bit steep for the going catalog price, but... the color variation in the metal particularly appeals to me and I'm not looking to build a high-end type collection, so I'm happy with it.

Hi Bug Guy,

Welcome to CCF Canadian forums... we're the rowdy bunch

Very nice colour in the planchet... unique and attractive eye-appeal... in my opinion VF-20...

Take care, and Have a Great Weekend!

Why the need to be so negative with a newcomer... what's to be gained by being harsh and critical...?

I'm sure that you've made some purchases in the past that "you could have done better on..."

Really...

I think there's a lot of collectors out there who would disagree...

Tiger stripes or "woodies" do have eye appeal, if you like that sort if thing there is no problem paying a premium.
Passing over a coin that you like and can afford, regardless of catalog value or someone else's opinion, is just bad collecting.

All-
Thanks for the input, and no worries, eh? This is the first Newfie large cent for my collection, and yes, I did pay too much according to the catalog. At the time there were several sellers with a lot of similar Canadian-ish items for sale- I was kind of surprised that (it seemed like) many of them were going for above cat value (perhaps that's another thread...). I'm not particularly focused on building a set of Newfie coins- this one just happened to catch my eye- the grade, unusual grain and "newness" factor all fit in with my collecting tendencies and so I guess I paid a premium for the experience.

That said, I've got a 1920 Newfoundland cent on its way to me in the mail- I'll post a picture when it arrives and we'll see if I made out better with that one!

And cameron93- I checked out your store- you have some very nice coins, though most are a decimal point or two out of my league, particularly since I don't consider myself a Canada specialist!

cheers,

@ Cameron 93 if you are looking for a battle , my door is not one to knock on! You have been on the edge lately and according to the moderators of this forumn are close. As to this coin hardly negative. I have been trying for over 40 years to educate collectors as to the pitfalls of buying and selling coins. I just stated what my opinion is. This collector could have had a better coin for the money ; nothing more and certainly nothing less!

i personally love the look of this coin, unfortunately I dont think it is an xf but it is vf, sure you over paid a bit but we all have a some point; the thing is if you are happy with it then you spent the right amount, there is no need for people be so harsh with you, it may not be what they want, but it is what you want and that is all that matters in the end!
