Well, I picked up my Rennicks predecimal coin variety book today. I have a month off work. And, coincidentally, my slice of the massive coin hoard on E-Bay arrived today. 4kg of QEII pennies. Can't wait to open one/some of these rolls. Not sure what to expect, anyone else our there get there hands on some of these? What did you find? Did you come across any surprises? Please, do tell!

Some of these lots went for between $200-$300, however I won't pay more that $40 per kilo for bulk lots of circulated pennies. I picked these up for $80 inc postage. I opened the first roll, last night. Some spots of verdigris on a few of them, nothing major. Probably grade from aEF to to aUnc. Very few rim nicks or knocks. maximum brilliance of 60-70% on a few coins, with a wide range of color from light pink to purple. There is a nice purple 1953M. I did expect to see some rubbing on the surface of these, but not much to speak of. A couple with planchet tears. A little die variety, not as much as I would have liked, there is a Perth penny with a dot that looks like a football. Not much in terms of error coins, actually, a couple of them have some minor ghosting, but no die clashes or cracks. Overall, not too bad for $0.20 per coin.

Well done, almost impossible to pick up rare coins in "ünsorted" lots these days as it only takes 5 minutes on Google for a novice to value a coin.I have picked up a 1919 double dot in a bulk buy so I guess you never know what may be have been missed by the seller.

I picked up 2 x 32/33 overdates from bulk lots, it's pot luck, really. I went through the 1959's in this lot that I opened, and found one with a rim Cud variety as stated in Rennick's, and another with a dot below the L of Eliz right on the hairline, not mentioned in Rennicks, and another with a blob on the "Z".

Purple penny is a lot more purple and shiny in real life Just realised, purple penny is a variety listed in rennicks - "Dot's on roo's back above neck join & dot between LI of Australia"

I had wondered about that. I have a few pennies with a shiny "glazed" look about them, so I guess they've been cleaned as well. Only 1 x 1959M, slight double rim. No photos at the moment, have to go downtown and get some more batteries.

Apologies if you're being sarcastic (I am a bit slow this morning) but how can they be unsorted if they are in hand-made rolls labelled with the date?

No worries,i wasn't referring to your coins but generic ebay "ünsorted lots",coins found in old tin in backyard shed, coins found under floorboards, etc.,chances that the seller hasn't checked them out is almost nil in these days of the Internet.

Variety from 1961. Could be a combination of 2 Rennick's or a new unlisted. "Dot Below L/H leg of of second A of Australia" and "Dot above Roo's back"

That is crazy! Do you need a machine to roll them or can you do it by hand? I'm going to give it a go.
