I use photobucket for linking pics but all my photos are stored on my own server. Buy a 1Tb external usb drive for long term storage.

There are many free hosting sites like photobucket, imageshack, flickr, etc. Those are made just for pictures and can easily be linked to forums or ebay. Other options are 'cloud' storage like dropbox or google drive. There you can store any type of file but they're not as optimized for sharing images. You should look into several as there are differences between how much is free and when you have to start paying.

I do use photobucket but I find it's search facility terrible.

While the service I use costs (39 per year) I have unlimited storage and access for my pics anytime. I use Smugmug.com.
There are others, you can also get a hosting service for a website with unlimited storage as well for around the same price or even cheaper.

If all you want is storage for ebay, there's no need for anything but your own computer. ebay will host your images themselves. An E-commerce site of your own can either run on your own website (in which case you'll host your images there) or if you do something like Ecrater they'll host for you. In any event, there's no need for some remote image hosting website - it's just an additional level of complexity. The space will add up either way. My current coin image archive numbers a little over 9600 images, and occupies 30GB of hard drive space. Many of them are full-resolution dSLR images, though, around 5MB apiece. A nice, high-res selling image will run about 300kb each, for planning purposes so figure about 1.5GB for 5000 images.

Don't trust a third party with your images. Keep a copy on an external hard drive and put them on DVD's. Keep one set of DVD's in your safe deposit box.

The best thing would be a USB stick from Wal-mart, the 120 GB one. That should hold all your pictures.

Please don't put your trust in cheap thumb drives. I assume that you all have many hours of work into your photos. At least make DVD back up copies. Poor back up habits are an eventual path to disaster!

If you have that many pictures that you need for back up, I would sign up for a Microsoft SkyDrive account. Then you just save your files locally and SkyDrive backs them up for you.
