Hi!

This is not my coin but It's up for auction and I might want to try and buy it.

But before I put my money in it I need some help from you collectors that have more experiance than me

Is it an MS coin?

The scratches on the obverse = cleaned?
The black spots on the reverse = cleaned? I can't see any scratches so it might have been "dipped"?

I've heared that dipped coins can get covered in black spots as time passes by, true or false?

I know that only me,myself and I must decide how much money I want to pay for a coin. But for me to put a price on it it's important to know if it's been cleaned. if it's AU50-MS60 doesn't matter that much for me.

So fellow collectors, what is your opinion on this coin?

This is definitely not a mint state example. The hairlines and luster breaks indicate that at best it's a cleaned AU. The apparent cheek wear and the highest points on the devices further eliminate a MS grade.

AU50 Details; I'd be astonished if the surfaces on this one weren't polished.

Luster amid devices, sellers face on reverse.
Polished without a doubt. Avoid unless it's a smokin' price.

Run away - unless you can pick it up super cheap, like melt + a very small premium.

I say AU-Details Polished too. It is a nice coin though if you like it and got a good price. I have some polished up V nickels that look like that I pulled from a lot for pocket pieces. Funny I saw someone advertise a coin like that as proof-like. I wouldn't say it is worth melt plus a small premium, I would like it for $15-$20. It kind of reminds me of the finish on a polished silver serving tray or pitcher or something. Maybe silver polish was used on it?

AU details. Cleaned on a good day but more likely than not polished.

The PCGS price guide values this date at $575 in EF-40 and $1100 in AU-55. This AU-details piece should be valued at some fraction of the EF price. I'd expect $200 would be closer to a realistic price. If you can't tolerate a polished coin then you wouldn't be a buyer but a collector might jump pretty high to pick up this well-detailed piece to fill that difficult hole in the Barber quarter set.

jaobler, didn't see the mintmark and was thinking a common date quarter, so yes worth quite a bit more than spot plus a premium. Sorry I called the pricing way wrong

The danger with seeking info for an item still up at the auction site, is that ppl luriking around in here can try to snipe it.

took me about 30 seconds to find it. Just as a warning for future postings...
