Hi enworb I agree a carbon streak is a planchet flaw once it disturbs the surface but I don't think it is considered a flaw if it is simply a streak of colour. On that penny there are many carbon streaks but only one that intrudes into the surface. Perhaps this is a combination of a planchet peel with a carbon streak. But I'm only guessing really.

Id say the lamination is a result of the carbon streak being a weaker section if the planchet. I'll post my one a bit later today. Its very similar.

There is supportive evidence for both schools of thought though enworb. I have seen a lot of planchet flaws, peels, delaminations with no evidence of any carbon being involved, but I'm going to switch to your position in this case, as it is stronger. The peel appears to coincide with the planchet streak (rather than the reverse) which is evidence for the peel being a 'result' of the carbon in the planchet. I had erroneously thought that carbon streaks were from 'drag' over the top of a 'spot' of carbon in the extruding or polishing or whatever, process. I realize with a closer look that the carbon streak is the result of pockets or reefs of carbon being exposed at the surface. (with probably some drag too) Hope that makes some sense.

Im not sure the black marks are actually carbon, I remember reading thats just what theyre called. Laninations can happen for a variety of reasons but all are different forms of planchet flaws, mainly impurities in the metal but also gas bubbles etc

If you find the article I would be interested to read it. Or any others. Thanks. Very interested to see the photos of your coins.

That was funny but that was the unicorn's comment wasn't it? What did you say that prompted the unicorn's comment "Robster ...... you crack me UP!" Is it a private joke or relating to something historical?
Actually don't worry, I'm content to not understand, it's getting bigger than Ben Hur. LOL
