An idea for a thread - gold coins (pre 1900) to discount modern bullion.

My contribution will be very limited but here's one

Please post yours.

Great idea for a thread! I only have a couple to contribute as well, but I imagine this is gonna be a shiny, drool worthy thread!

Here's my 1882 $5 (MS-63 raw.. For now) I love this coin, 100 years before my birthday so I wanted a nice example of this one. Colors a bit off in the photos, booming luster in hand.

And this one is a bit past the cutoff date, but it's not modern bullion, so I figured it had a place..

1911 $5 AU-58 raw
The colors horrible in the first pic, but its the only shot I have of it right now.. the color of the obverse is more like the reverse pic, that's actually pretty dead on.. Great luster too..

Those are both neat coins. I think I prefer the 1911 $5 just for the boldness of the design.

Very nice - there is something very cool about the Spanish coins (visions of pirates and the like). And I do like the early Islamic (ayyubid?) coin too.

One of my favorites, nice orange peripheral toning, bird and quivers reverse. Best yet, the emperor's name is spelled wrong! Augstinus instead of Augustinus. I'll bet some heads rolled for this.

Another fun coin. Mexico 1 real 1860/59 the assayer initials are (inverted A)L instead of VL. Those crazy Zacatecas mint workers!

One of the more elusive coins of the series. Unfortunately it was brushed.

Umayyad, I think

Yep, it's Umayyad. The date, if anyone's curious, is Year 119 in the Islamic calendar (AD 737).
