I am like Merc and Barry the gold plate could have been a bit more defined, but what an amazing piece. I too love that reverse design it really is amazing design as I have always liked the history of the wing helmet messenger....

Just now realizing it is a cylinder way cool. Its a nice compact way to stack 6 oz., minus the packaging which is well worth the loss space. I am gonna start hunting those on ebay as 600 to 650 seems like real bargain and unique angle....

Yes, I noticed that as well. I was wondering if that accounted for the lower selling prices, perhaps because fewer buyers are willing to risk purchasing from overseas.

To be honest, I haven't seen anything else on that website unique enough to warrant the high premiums. There have been other "pop-up" coins before (I remember one featuring the World Trade Center Twin Towers awhile back), so I wouldn't expect this one to be particularly collectible in the long run.
Just my opinion, of course, but the reasons I was willing to shell out so much money for the FORTUNA REDUX was because it was completely unique, it was apparently difficult to produce (and therefore not likely to be imitated) and had a lot of positive buzz surrounding it prior to release (it was featured at last year's World Money Fair in Berlin).
I dunno, I might be a buyer for the coin you linked at $79, but not at $179.

Okay, thanks! After looking at it some more, it isn't 'special' enough for me to spend that much.

Quote: Thank you for posting pictures of the coin in hand (vs marketing photos wich are always too perfect). Well, thanks for pointing out that my pictures aren't perfect... I've always had a devil of a time photographing proof coins straight on so you can actually see they are proofs without an obvious reflection of my camera. After some experimentation, though, I think I've come up with something workable. I've updated the pictures I posted at the beginning of this thread, but here are the old and new versions for comparison's sake: Original: Updated: Hopefully, the updated pictures aren't "too perfect" for you...

Wow that has to be gorgeous in hand!
BTW - surprised some of our die hard Winged Liberty dime collectors are not a bit peeved that this coin adds to the confusion of the US never making an actual Mercury effigy on a dime?!

All right, I have to admit I'm having some doubts about the long-term collectible value of this thing. I don't know if it has anything to do with the falling spot price of silver, but these are now selling on ebay for $599. Even APMEX currently has 38 of them in stock for sale at $629. I do still love the way it looks and plan to hold onto it for a looooong time and hopefully pass it down to my son some day. I'm just hoping it doesn't end up being worth spot value in 20 years...

Barry,
My guess is it would never be worth less than $400, mainly due to its small mintage. I've been pricing them myself, for a while now. I still definitely want one. The last one I saw went for $535 + S&H a few days ago. You're right about falling spot prices affecting second source offerings, though. Most of the proofs I've bought lately have been at traditionally depreciated levels. I'm hoping to pick the Niue up below $500 but it's almost a race against time before they all disappear. We'll see what happens. If/when spot increases, so will the Redux's value, IMO. So, long-term growth potential on something this unique should be through the roof, not that you ever plan on selling it, sounds like.

I refuse to call that denominated ingot a coin, but it is quite pretty nonetheless. :-)
