I'm still in favor of a W-mint coin appearing in the mint set.

It would go along with the 50 year anniversary dime and add some pizzazz to the Kennedy set. It would be a bonus to long time mint set buyers at a time mint set sales have been flagging. The w-dime was really nice quality.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Updating costs money without gaining them anything which is why it wont happen

Except the only machines today that HAVEN'T been updated are those that are over 34 years old AND which haven't had their coin mechanisms break down in 34 years of use. I would think that would be a rather small percentage of the machines out there.

First off, there are states with no sales tax? If so, thats news to me.

Yup, lot's of things out there that you would be amazed at...like credit/debit cards, RFID contactless payments for all payments under $20, Square card readers for small merchants etc.....coins/cash are really not needed for 90% of all transactions. Have you ever tried to purchase a drink on a flight? They do NOT accept cash anymore...no plastic, no drinky

I almost never use cash for any transactions and this is the way the new generation will develop. No need to carry around half dollars or $10,000 bills which are more a novelty than a viable method of payment. No worries about making change for ANY transaction.

It's kinda like a quest to get more water troughs along the highways for those who still travel by horseback...nice idea except...... not very many still travel by horseback.

@Foxwoods Man

I am 50 years old, but my love of tech and computer programming has kept me pretty much up to date on what is out there. And although I am from a previous generation, I have young people coming to me all the time for information on their computers etc. I admit I really like new tech - and always have. But the problem is that even old tech is not as widely spread as people who are immersed in new-tech-saturated pockets of society think.

Where I live has been a DC-commuting community for awhile now. And yet you would not believe the number of people who have never seen an iPad (or similar) device. And I am not just talking about older people!

The fact of the matter is that there are high tech, cutting edge pockets (large ones like NY city), and then there is the rest of the world.

It was only 5 years ago at work I stood at the front window and started my car by pushing a button on my keychain. One of the summer-off-university-student employees asked me if I was pretending like I was Batman or something with a device for starting my car from a distance.

He was totally shocked to find out that (minus playing Batman) this is exactly what I had just done. He called everyone over to see the "amazing hi-tech device." You should have seen the looks on their faces when I told them this was old tech from 10 years ago. I just shocked another person with this info the other day - a young waitress at a restaurant.

Someone who has the fun of being immersed in cutting edge, high tech areas, cash may seem obsolete - b/c to them it is. But rubbing elbows with people from all areas, you will find a lot of cash is still used; and... for example, a large number of young people have no idea what their phones/devices are actually capable of (sad - but true).

Be prepared...
Everyone KNEW when I was a kid that we would be on Mars by the 80's. Politics, politicians, and special interest groups driving these people have a horrible way of stepping in and killing our high tech advancement by sacrificing them on the altar of greed.

What we are told we can do, should do, and what certainly will be done. normally fizzles out in the end. This is a bitter pill to swallow for tech oriented people.

Most machines have been updated in some way or another, but I was referring to do an update just to add half dollars. If they update to add credit cards or keep the machine working they get a good return on that. Credit cards will definitely generate more sales and if the machine doesn't work it cant sell. But the amount of sales theyve missed out on for not accepting halfs is miniscule and probably wouldnt even cover the cost. Reconfiguration may have been a better word to use in hindsight

Mint may sell 2014 Kennedy half dollar set !

The United States Mint has under consideration six different multicoin options to mark the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half dollar in 2014.

Among the possibilities, from which two options could be selected, is a four-coin set containing Reverse Proof 2014 90 percent silver half dollars struck at each of the four production facilities, in Philadelphia, San Francisco, Denver and West Point.

Mint officials are also considering a second four-coin option, two three-coin options and two two-coin options.

All the ideas suggested would include an informational booklet tracing the history of the Kennedy half dollar, which was authorized by Congress slightly more than a month after the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The four-coin set is one of several options referenced in a Kennedy half dollar Special Set Survey launched April 11 by the U.S. Mint's internal market research team in conjunction with the Mint's research partner, National Analysts Worldwide, headquartered in Philadelphia.

Under consideration

Tom Jurkowsky, the U.S. Mint's director of the Office of Public Affairs, said April 18 that the survey is being conducted among both customers and noncustomers to obtain feedback about several Kennedy half dollar set options under consideration.

"The options ... are just that â€" options that we are researching in an effort to get feedback," Jurkowsky said. "There's no guarantee, of course, that any of these would interest customers. We are contemplating on producing two sets â€" high-end and low-end â€" with various coin combinations. We really need to see the feedback before we commit ourselves to a given direction."

In addition to the possible four-coin set of Reverse Proof coins, other options under consideration are:

➤ A four-coin set containing three Proof copper-nickel clad half dollars (one each from the West Point, Philadelphia and Denver Mints) plus one 90 percent silver Reverse Proof half dollar from the San Francisco Mint.

➤ A three-coin set containing one copper-nickel Proof half dollar, one copper-nickel clad Reverse Proof coin, and one copper-nickel clad Uncirculated half dollar. Each would bear a Mint mark (P, D, W or S) reflecting where it is minted, although final decisions on minting locations haven't yet been made.

➤ A three-coin set containing one 90 percent silver Proof half dollar, one 90 percent silver Reverse Proof coin and one 90 percent silver Uncirculated half dollar. Each would bear a Mint mark (P, D, W or S) reflecting where it is minted, although final decisions on minting locations haven't yet been made.

➤ A two-coin set featuring one Proof copper-nickel clad half dollar and one Reverse Proof copper-nickel clad half dollar. Each would bear a Mint mark (P, D, W or S) reflecting where it is minted, although final decisions on minting locations haven't yet been made.

➤ A two-coin set featuring one Proof 90 percent silver half dollar and one Reverse Proof 90 percent silver half dollar. Each would bear a Mint mark (P, D, W or S) reflecting where it is minted, although final decisions on minting locations haven't yet been made.

Authorization

Legislation introduced to authorize production of the Kennedy half dollar received congressional approval on Dec. 30, 1963, and was quickly signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Even before the coin was authorized, work was already under way on coinage dies. Contemplating possible production of the Kennedy half dollar, U.S. Mint Director Eva Adams had contacted Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts about the pending legislation.

For the half dollar obverse, Roberts modified his portrait of Kennedy that the engraver had executed for the Kennedy medal in the Mint's Presidential Series. Assistant Engraver Frank Gasparro worked on modifications to the reverse of the same medal, featuring the presidential seal, for adaptation on the coin's reverse.

The quick modifications to existing designs permitted the completion of the first dies on Jan. 2, 1964.

The initial production comprised Proof versions struck at the Philadelphia Mint.

The first Kennedy half dollars intended for circulation were struck in 90 percent silver at the Denver Mint on Jan. 30, 1964.

The Philadelphia Mint began execution of its first production for circulation the following week.

The Treasury Department made the circulating coins available to the public beginning on March 24, 1964.

A 50th Anniversary Kennedy four coin set would cost around $150 + S/H

I'm game for a 4 coin reverse proof silver set.

HOWEVER, I hope that the mint is not becoming the sports card industry in the later 1990s with standard card packs, premium card packs, super premium card packs with the hope of scoring one of the 5 limited issue jersey piece cards per year, and the same game plan across the 4 major brands and the average collector is shunned out of the market and then 10 years later none of the cards are worth squat.

The 2014 Kennedy 50th anniversary four coin set should have all silver coins and 100th anniversary set should have all gold coins

1. Bullion version (P) mm
2. Proof version (D) mm
3. Reverse Proof version (S) mm
4. Enhanced Uncirculated version (W) mm

Well, I'm really bummed out that they are not making any "circulation" quality halves for this redesign program. At the very least, they could melt down half of their current ten year supply of circulation quality halves of the current design, and use the metals redeemed from the melting pot to strike new style halves on them, and possibly spark SOME interest in them and make them circulate a little better than they do, similar to the Presidental and Native American dollar coins. Those don't circulate much either, but the new designs draw some attention to them.

Or at even more least, the Mint could do bags and rolls of the new design halves for the 2014 redesign. *sigh* Maybe I could propose the idea.

Fox, the info Hollywood posted seems to imply no change to the design itself. Just options the Mint is considering for different finishes and compositions regarding possible sets.

Lol, too heavy. Give me a break! I personally find paper money to be cumbersome. They're nasty and force me to carry a wallet so that they don't fly away. They're too light!

I don't see what the problem is with Sacagewa and president dollars. You have to be colorblind and stubborn not to accept those.

Fox remember that these sets are going to carry huge premiums from face value. Having bags and rolls would be like trying to order a monster box of the special ASE sets. Theres no chance someone is going to spend that kind of money to dump these into circulation

basebal21,

I know that if they were just coming out with sets, they'll be expensive, but as someone else posted, I don't think yhey are talking about a redesign anyway, just maybe a set with all of the miny marks, but it would have been nice if they would, with all other coins except the half and the dime having no recent redesigns.
