I am thinking about purchasing this 1770 Ecu for $65.00. Pics are from my iphone. Do you think the price is good and does it look authentic?

Thanks for your replies! I just picked it up:) Here are some better pics; and pics of the edges. It is 28.91 grams (my scale is about a 1/2 gram on the light side) The diameter is 43mm widest and 41mm narrowest. Louis XV, Ecu O: LUD XV D G FR ET NAV REX Rx: 1770 SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM Mint: "L", Bayonne There is lettering on the edges. Can anyone tell me what the full legend would be? Is it the same as the reverse legend? Also, I think I am seeing overlaps at 12:00 and 6:00 from collars; were these made similarly to the Spanish coins with overlaps? All of your help is greatly appreciated!

Very nice! For some reason French Ecus are not easy to come by in my part of the States. So I'm jealous.

A very nice Ecu. Though I frequently find an Ecu for sale over here, they're extremely hard to get in a decent grade.

That's a great looking coin and nice bargain. I pretty much bought all the European crowns from my local shop and new ones are hard to come buy. I guess if you are in north east US you are more likely to find these type of old gems but not so much in the south.
Btw there s a 1/2 ecu in my local shop that being priced at $100 which I refuse to buy as it is not nearly a half of yours with very weak strike.

I like it. Because the scratches are parallel I think they are stries d'ajustage which were done at the mint to get the coin weight correct. I just picked up a somewhat lower grade 1777 for $35, about what a common Peace dollar sells for these days. Check http://www.cgb.fr for comparative retail price on your coin, probably 70-100 euro range.
