Be as cruel as you need to be.
Got it a month ago. Doesn't give me warm fuzzies, but
I had a hunch.

I wonder if Verdi-care would help that coin some? How much was it and what variety type is it?

The pole's there, Ddave, just a bit faint. I think S-84 for variety?

Had me going there for a bit; I'm accustomed to seeing the pole at about the same relief as the neck.

I am color blind - I cannot see red and green easily.
I have no idea as to the variety.
I traded some nasty looking Barber and Seated Liberty dimes plus $137 cash.
$550 was the asking price FOR ME! (The dealer likes me)
$900 was on the insert.

Wait:

Breen 168
S-84
Explanation of these terms would be very helpful.

The word used was "Porosity."
Same or different meaning from corrosion?

Thank you.

Ddave,

Isn't this the pole?
1796-Large-Cent---Comments,-Critisisms-And--Whatever-Sought.

Since I didn't care too much about the dimes that I traded,
this 1796 comes in at the $137 cash paid.

Hey, George Washington was president in 1796!

90% of what I traded was junk silver.

Yay! I got the variety right! S-84 is the Sheldon die variety number, Matthew. There were 11 varieties for the 1796 Liberty Cap (the Draped Busts started later the same year). My guess on "porosity?" "Porous" is to "corroded" as "eccentric" is to "insane." And for coins, as for people, whether you're called one or the other depends on how much money you're worth!

Here is a link to a posting I made on Porosity, Granularity & Corrosion. It explains them pretty good. this appears to be corrosion caused by exposure to moisture over time. it appears to be raised and not imbedded. its hard to tell without having the coin in hand. the greenish hue is part of the reaction with the copper and moisture. this is very typical for these early coppers. the degree of corrosion is really the deciding factor on lowering the grade and obviously price. Some TPG's will distinguish between Porous, Granular and Corroded when they grade.

I added a response to this topic, panzaldi.
Thanks a lot!

And philadelphian, could you have possibly been incorrect? I doubt it!
Good point, if you got money you are eccentric.
If not, you are insane.

Guess that makes me insane!

Some of the green cast could also be from the white balance on the camera. If shot with a fluorescent bulb lighting the area the coin is in, a green cast will appear. Just a thought, the green may be more pronounced in the photos due to something like that. It's a neat coin - I don't have one that old from the US, yet.
