HI,

I don't really collect US coins - only as items of interest in my world coin collection. I must have picked these up somewhere - but I don;t remember where - but have just re-discovered them.

I'm really just wondering if there is anything interesting here.

thanks

I'd call them as follows (hard to tell if cleaned really, as the color is off on all of them):

1881 - VF30.
1895 - XF40.
1880 - G4 details (is it bent?).
1883 - VF30 details.
1889 - AU50, possibly details (grade might be a bit higher, but from this pics it's hard to say if color is original and if there's some luster there).
1898 - XF40 details.

Thanks very much- Yes I think the 89 is the best coin - possibly worth keeping, though I'd have called it an EF. The 1880 seems to have been flattened or something - at one edge.
Rest in Peace

Bacchus2, nice re-discover! Did you try acetone on these? Some of the chunks look organic.
1889 is the best and would agree EF also the 1895 EF.

Nice little batch. The 1889 is definitely in the AU range. Too bad about the 1880. I'd put it at G6 details..near VG.

I think the early 80's coins with the full "LIBERTY" are best and the AU coin. There are no rare dates though, the early 80s are a little better.

I was going through my cull V nickels and found this. Is this 1889?
It only has partial date but good enough for a filler.

The coin was minted from 1859 to 1909 and it's design by the legendry American portraitist, James Barton Longacre. It is widely known that due to the hoarding of all coins during the Civil War, the nickel cents disappeared from daily use and were replaced in many Northern cities by private token.
