This may be of interest to some. I started my coin collection in 1954, when I was twelve. Saving my allowance and grass-cutting money until I had $20, I would ride my bike to the local bank and get 20 silver dollars, keep the ones I liked, trade the rest in for half dollars, and so forth. One day I got a 1923 Peace dollar with a neat hole drilled through it. It had plenty of mint luster, but no value as a collector coin. I attached it to my key ring and have been carrying it in my pocket ever since - " about 59 years. The photo shows what it looks like now. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

to the CCF community!!! That's a great story, to have kept that all these years and using it every day. Wonderful. I have some holed coins in our bags but have never thought about doing that. Welcome...

Wow, that's pretty cool. Is the reeding totally smooth?

Nice. I have kept me overstruck Peace dollar on my pocket for 1 1/2 years and keep 2 Mississippi sales tax tokens and a counter stamped 40% Kennedy half on my keyring I found roll searching last year.

What reeding? The edge is totally smooth and rounded, without a trace of the reeding left. And the hole is over twice as large as it was originally.

That thing is going to wear itself out of its keyring way before another half century passes by.

Hi clearsig and welcome - - -- it is also great to see someone almost my age getting back to collecting as I am! I'm thinking that I am not too old to do this! You are obviously thinking the same way. Pete

I started coins the same way you did, back in the 50`s from my paper route, etc and a lady on my route would go through my change and take all the good ones. I got wise to her and started myself. I have an old 1797 cartwheel 2pence my grandpa brought from England in 1889 that looks like that dollar of yours. I should drill it and do the same.

That is really neat! If that thing had an odometer, how many miles you think would be on it? I have a nickel with a cross cut into it my church gave me when I graduated high school. I carry it on my key chain and it is worn smooth after 21 years. I figure it has almost a million miles on it! Fun to think about.

I think GR58 is on to something. Maybe you should get it slabbed.
That way you can start with a new one!
