Hi All,

Thank you for letting me know about photo grading. I've attached the front and back of a 2-cent piece from my dad's collection.

Thoughts?

Peace,
Bud

I'm in agreement with supgog. EF environmental. Corrosion looks like it may have been in the ground at one time

excellent coin

what kind of storage did your dad keep his collection in? based on the 1916 Winged Head 10c and this, they both seem to have heavy patinas and that could be a result of the elements that the coins reside in. never too late to stop the process by considering some better storage methods so none of the coins get too far gone

Hi All,

Thanks for the grades! dsfreeworld -- the reason I picked the 1916 merc & the 2-cent piece is because I was always amazed that my dad had found them in the ground with is metal detector. So you folks are right on -- env damage for sure!

But when he first showed them to me (and a few others), I couldn't believe that something could be in the ground for 70-100+ years and come out looking that good (relatively speaking, of course).

He explained that he sometimes found things in "sand pockets" that the rain never got into. I'm still amazed to this day.

No worries as far as collection storage -- always been in a cool, dry place. Most coins are in some type of enclosure (or roll).

His collection only contained a few "found" coins. And only 5 or so appear to be worth anything more than bullion value. The 2-cent & the 1916 dime were two of them. I'll post some non-found coins soon. Probably a couple of Morgans.

Thank you to all!

Peace,
Bud

EF-AU environmental damage. Nice details!

If that is "green" stuff (vergis) that I am seeing then I would give it a quick soak in acetone to stop it. My dad put away some 1860's Indian Head cents from my grandfather that had vergis. By the time I saw them the coins were covered in green. My dad knew not to clean the coins but had no idea the damage that was being done by the green stuff:( I did an acetone soak that arrested the corrosion and removed most of the green. A few came out ok but the damage was done.

I'm in at AU details as well defintely corroded so details too!. Don't know how much acetone would help this piece but it couldn't hurt it.

Thank you, All! I learned a lot.

TJsCoins--Thanks for the info on the "green stuff." You're probably right. I'm guessing my dad already protected it somehow because it hasn't evolved in years. Good to know, though.

Peace,
Bud

The copper has protected itself in the way copper usually does. That's why you see green copper roofs which are centuries old.
