Two more showed up today - David Lange's The complete guide to Lincoln Cents along with Flynn's Authorative Reference to Barber dimes. Yes I will eventually read all of them, some are really just reference books others well I will read and reread over and over. I read pretty quick at around 1200 wpm with a 90% comprehension, so I burn through books. The date by date reference titles aren't so quick to take in, but I will make notes for certain coins to look out for in my searches at shows and online.

That is quite an extensive library there West ! They all seem to be coin specific. What do you recommend for general US Silver coins?

Quote: What do you recommend for general US Silver coins? Can't go wrong with the RedBook! It has most all information needed on every US coin made to date of publication, it is fact checked over and over each year.

Books are good! I recently bought myself a bound copy of an old auction catalogue from the 1950s; one of a series of 13 sales of a collection. This one has the most of the coins I'm interested in. Oddly, though it's a British sale (Glendining) of English coins, it was part of the old stock of an American library. Anyway, it's home again now!
I'm always on the lookout for other auction catalogues, but the ones I want are real difficult to track down. You mention old catalogues and people think of the 1970s but I'm after ones from the 1920s and 30s. They come up occasionally at auction so I guess I'll just keep looking.
And in the meantime, if anyone happens to have a copy of the Glendining sale of Grant Francis' coins on 24 Mar 1920, ideally named and priced, I'd be very interested to hear from you!

Not as exciting as westcoin's acquisitions, but another one for my library. A bound (ex library) copy of the British Numismatic Journal from 1918: I bought it primarily for one article, however there's plenty of other stuff of interest. Even after all these years!

I bought the whole year of 1954 Numismatic Scrapbook for one article, it was a two part article and that was the only way I could get both issues. Was a bargain though only $26.00 for all 12 issues. Sometimes us coin history buffs are a little nuts.

But then ... when your interests start to get a bit specialised then general books on coins often don't have the information you need. Then the hunt for the more obscure starts! And while information might get added as facts come to light, if the writer has done a decent job, then an article from the 50s can be just as informative as (if not more than) one written last week!
