I'm new to the error coin thing. Please help me identify this coin error and maybe give me a possible value. Thank you in advance.

to the CCF. Agree that this coin was likely struck through a capped obverse die ... a nice find but alas not truly a valuable rarity. Nice find however ... David

That's alright. I'm happy to have found it even though it may not be worth a fortune. Thanks.

How would I go about authenticating the coin and getting it appraised?

You can figure out a price by looking at similar sold items on ebay. As far as authentication, you could take it to your local coin store. However, the group on this forum is one of the best. They usually get it right.

There's no need for further authentication. It's struck through a capped die. It's probably worth about $15-30. It's tough to put an exact price on it.

If it were graded at PCGS it would bring $100-$150 but the error attribution costs $55 on top of the yearly fee of so it is not worth having graded. I would just keep it. That is a rare find in circulation. One sold for $70 out of buy it now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPECTACULAR...047675.l2557 Auctions don't bring as much as Buy It Nows do but they also take longer to sell sometimes.

How did you come to this estimate? I haven't ever seen a simple struck through die cap dime sell for that much. That BIN listing also seems to be an outlier for these errors. One thing I have noticed about these struck through die caps though, is that price depends on the look. Some, like the one in the BIN you pointed out don't sell for as much as ones with a more disintegrated, "starburst" look. The seller of that BIN listing was lucky, but as you said, patience does pay off.

This is definitely a rare one to find in circulation, nice capped die you got there!

I made up the value but it is about right if it were in a holder and had a grade on it (meaning not a details grade or genuine).
I said it was not worth grading but it is worth trying to get more out of in a buy it now situation.
The one that sold you can make out that it is a 1989 maybe that is why it sold for $70. I know it really helps to have a date on your error coins.
