I like the look of the cameo proof Pres dollars in my proof sets. Just got in a bunch of circulation strike coins form one of those Littleton offers. Have to say that I don't like them. Without the contrast of the cameo, they look like chocolate coins.

The choice of color is one the biggest complaints. I like the idea of them a lot, the execution not so much. The only thing worse than the gold color is the color they turn after circulation

Yeah, they are pretty terrible. A good idea that just went south. They should have been silver or Ni-Cu, silver dollar size, and made only for collectors, IMO.

Actually, they look like those collectible tokens you used to get from gas stations with a fill up.

The Mint should have known better than to use manganese, just look at any well-circulated War Nickel...

The golden color idea started from the Susan B. Anthony dollar, whose conventional Cu-Ni appearance led to confusion with the Quarter (ie: the "Carter Quarter" nickname). As stunning as the Proof Golden Dollars are, I do still like them in BU grade. The "stale mustard" color they turn in circulation, though...

@ Conder101- you mean the same purpose they were trying to accomplish with the Eisenhower, SBA, and Sac dollars? No. What I meant in my post was that these Presidential dollars should never have been made as circulation pieces to begin with. They should only have been made as collector coins to be purchased- kind of like the commemorative silver dollars they make every year. I think these would have done very well for the mint. I know I would have bought every one. I like the designs- just not the color and size. The DO look like cheap tokens. It would have been great to have an ongoing series of Presidential Silver Dollars to collect.

Quote: The only thing worse than the gold color is the color they turn after circulation True. I am no longer collecting these from circulation for this reason (and the for the fact that they are NIFC now, so there is that). I only collect the proofs now. The mint did this hoping that it would help the baby dollars circulate more. They fail to realize that the circulating one dollar note is what keeps them from being successful.

I only collect the proofs now. Mine come straight from mint sets, it was a real eye opener seeing one that had been used. Im really not a fan of proofs in general, but I will say these do look incredible in proof form.

I do not buy mint sets, since I prefer my circulation coins to come from circulation; but I do get proof sets. I do agree that this in one series that really benefits from being issued as a proof. So far my proofs have not turned.

Proof or Unc, they really are nice looking coins. I just wish they would not turn so blasted ugly. DNA's stale mustard doesn't quite cover it IMO. Borders on dog poop brown.

I think both of you are much too kind in your description.

I agree 100%. I'm am fine with BU color, but as soon as that things put into circulation it ruins the coin. Too bad, they are really neat coins.

I only like them as proofs. BU Color is fine, but I think the portraits are poorly done. The reverse looks like it should be on a NY subway token. Also don't like the edge lettering.
