As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm curating my father-in-law's multi-generational coin collection. It includes the 1967 Royal Canadian Mint Set with the $20 gold coin. The silver coins are toned in an unattractive way (IMO, obviously), but the gold coin is flawless and beautiful.

My question is this: what is the best way to preserve and maximize value? Does the collector value premium lie in keeping the coins as a set? Or is there a particular collector premium on the gold coin that would warrant grading/slabbing it apart from the rest, since it is uncirculated and spotless?

Thanks for any advice.

There are so many of these produced that unless you have some Ultra heavy cameo coins, don't bother certifying them. Look on ebay, and see how many 1967 SP dollars are offered. I did a quick look for ICCS examples and counted 11 including a SP67HC.

The bullion value of the coins, far outstrips any numismatic value....When gold was MUCH higher, the set was going for about $900, I'm sure it's much lower now.

Split the gold away from the silver coins in the set.. sell each individually and don't bother getting the coin slabbed...

All the 67 coins go for around spot regardless of condition... depending on how you're planning to sell the entire collection... if you split the set.. you're going to get two different types of buyers... one for cheap silver and another for cheap gold... the pockets are different in each c ASE
