Any objections to the following scenario? I purchase a raw coin. I begin a thread asking for opinions on grade. I put the coin up for auction on ebay. I link to the grading thread from my auction. Just a random, insomnia induced thought, and if it would be frowned on, no problem. If the prevailing opinion is to offer it for sale here first, again, no problem.

Hi Mathman, Your proposal might create more of a commercial environment for CCF. I wonder what Forum Management thinks? I suppose if there were positive grading replies posted it might help your coin sell for a higher price. Negative reviews might have the opposite effect. Your proposal might bring a lot of new traffic to the Forum, which could be a good thing.

I personally believe that this Forum is here for us to teach and to learn. It is here for us to come together and make safe trades and sells with each other. To use that wealth of knowledge and input from this community to get a better price on a coin on ebay seems a little shady IMHO. Yes it would increase traffic but for the wrong reason. I think it would increase people joining the forum for one day just to get a grade opinion from us just to make a bigger buck online.

I remember someone doing just that one time with a counterfeit coin he said he had found, some of the forum members that were not familiar with the series told him he had found a key date coin and that it was probably worth allot of money. Well to make a long story short it was a day or two after he posted the question that someone that was knowledgeable in the series came in to tell the truth and it really put a cloud over our forum for awhile that we have had to fight to this day (everytime we see the seller he is selling this same coin and we do our best to get it ended by ebay because of its counterfeit origin) This would be a question that should be asked to Mom and DAD (Bobby and Susan) before it is ever attempted because this is their forum and we are just guests here because they let us, so before anything like that is decided I would definately want the person to talk it over with them first

Interesting question and I will throw in my thoughts. While I think that our coin grading forum is fantastic, and the folks here are always really close to the exact grade in total consensus, it is still very hard to make an accurate grade from photos only. Because of this, my opinion would be to potentially use the suggestions here for an assigned grade in your listing, but I don't think I personally would post a link. I think if you have good pictures and are honest, you will be just fine without the links here. JMO, and I certainly don't mean to have this come across the wrong way. Take a look at some of Superdave's ebay auctions and you will see a professional way to enlighten folks on your coins.

After some sleep, and reading the comments, posting a link wouldn't be prudent. Letting someone else do the work to get a better price for my coin would be perhaps just a step up from self-slabbing...
I believe that on coins that I can't decide on a grade for, I'll use the expertise here to give me guidance, work on getting good images, and giving precise, honest written descriptions.
I won't post any links.

Mathman, I think with Susan and Bobby's "ok" it would be a pretty good idea. However, your take on the posts here and your honest thoughts on the subject are very commendable in my opinion.

I fear that if the practice were to become common on CC that it would attract charlatans and shysters who would post inflated grades on their own coins via a second forum membership. In the end, it would alter CC, and almost certainly for the negative. I'm against it, but I'm not an owner or moderator, so what do I know. ;o)

Hi Everyone After discussions of this question ,, the staff has come to very similar opinions that have been expressed by all of the posters here !! Utilize the forum for opinions on the grade of your coin ,, but no direct links to the forum content in your ebay listings .This would also include copy and paste use of the opinions expressed in the grading threads!!I know that those who posted here came to the same decisions but there will be many who read the topic but do not post !! so for those folks I have given the determination of the forum staff . I would sure hate to think that any buyer might make a decision to buy a coin based on any grade I may have guessed at by looking at a photo. This could also open up the doors to any number of shady sellers wanting to legitimize a suspicious coin, wether it be fake, photo edited, or whatever.
