This unhappy coin would seem to warrant a grade of VF25 details. Opinions on net grade & value?

VF25 sounds about right for the level of detail remaining. The damage is bordering on severe and removes most of the numismatic value.
I'd net-grade it to AG or G and value it at $40 or so.

I bought this on ebay when I started getting back into coins after a long hiatus. The photos on the listing were blurry and it ended up costing (gasp) $55. I'm listing it this evening, properly described with crisp photos. I'll be happy with $35.

Question: Could the discoloration circled on the obverse be the beginning of a hole that not quite went through the coin but was filled at a later date?

I don't think so. If you go through the PCGS phtograde pics, there's always a roughly circular spot of wear in that very spot.

I'm onboard with VF25 details, too bad she was so badly beaten up!

The person that abused her should be arrested, but by the looks of it, the damage was probably done 100 years ago or more. Culprit is likely already dead. I'll say VF-20. Value is hard to say as I personally wouldn't buy it unless it was 10 bucks or so. You never know, you may get your money back.

I'll go with VF-25 details. Still a decent coin for plugging a hole in an album. The coin does not appear to be plugged.

I would slap it on ebay and set her free to the highest bidder. I probably wouldn't go higher than ten bucks either, if I bid at all. That damage would just bug me till I got rid of it.

It's certainly worth more than $10. Even my LCS will give me $27 for it. Bust quarters are pricey.

Yes, it's worth more than $10 to someone, just not me. That's all I meant. My son picked this up for $49 a few months ago. Not a price you find often, but it is problem free and origonal.

I'll bet my coin could end up re-conditioned. After cosmetic surgery, it would probably fetch $150 with a "VF details, tooled, repaired" grade from a TPG.

For reference purposes: $150 is problem-free money for a 1835 CBQ in VF25. Any time spent trying to tool, repair, or TPG that coin would be wasted because it would still be a $40 coin afterwards.
