Just wanted to get confirmation that this is what this is, found in the lincoln album I bought a week or so ago. Part of the 'trumpet' of the S is nicked a little but you can still see it I believe. Edited by taylor34 07/16/2013 12:24 am

May be a large S, but part of the date and the mintmark has PMD - something flattened the high points of the date/mm.

1962penny: This variety is actually in the Cherrypicker's Guide. It is listed as FS-01-1928S-501 (013.6).

The best way to tell is the spike that almost connects to the upper serif. First thing to look for.

Quote: I never knew there was a large/small mintmark variety of 1928 - S Interesting... There are a few different San Fransisco mint mark varieteis. I just need the 2 1979's and 2 1981's to complete my "S" mint mark varieties set. Check this link out: http://lincolncentresource.com/San_..._Styles.html

Do not omit the fact that MMS-008 and MMS-009 are found on both proof and business strike 1974-S cents.
On the business strike coins only the large date is known with MMS-008 and only the small date is known with MMS-009.
On the proofs, all are large date and have a mixture of the two MM styles. No premium value has been established for either as all different varieties of 1974-S cents are thought to be evenly dispersed and common. So altogether a "complete" set of 1974-S cents includes:
1. Large date business strike: MMS-008 2. Small date business strike: MMS-009 3. Large date proof strike: MMS-008 4. Large date proof strike: MMS-009

taylor34: Yes that coin is the large S and I check ALL the 28-S I come across for this. From the reading and studying I have done it appears that only about 2-5% of the entire mintage. The entire mintage figure is 17,266,000 so at most we are talking about 863,300 coins are the Large S. Eventually the entire numismatic community will catch on this. It's really just as important as Large and Small date in 1970.

taylor34: What coop mentioned about the trumpet tail on the mintmark is generally the best way to tell the difference. I also look for the extra thickness in the S that large S has but small S does not. For example look on USA Coin Book. One seller, 1909S, has listed a Large S. Then when you look at some of the Small S listings such as the one listed by CoinShopBiloxi the one listed by qualitycoins designated as such and the two listed by myself atchisonbj designated as such.
Now do you notice how your coin has the thickness needed to be the Large S?

Thanks copper coins. I didn't know that. I'll try to pick up both when I start working on my proofs. I'll have to write that down so I don't forget. Thanks!
