Hi, new to this forum, know my Oz pennies reasonably well, have noticed a DUD 1930 (actually one of the Chinese copy coins) on ebay, item number 190868628693, it is actually part of the lot - have reported it to both ebay, 2times through report now, twice by phone, 1 time to PayPal. The bidding is over $4000 for what at best if every thing else is correct about $375-400 worth. ebay show no interest in removing the listing. Any idea on the best way to stop some unknowing person from getting burned- there is no way to contact the bidders, and twice have mailed the seller telling him the 1930 is a fake -got reply- says he knows nothing of coins -is selling for friend. Any idea on best way to get some action before someone is scammed Moved to Australian Coins forum - Sap

No worries, jamessmith, I've split your Topic out of the old thread for you, and now I'll move it to the Australian Coins subforum. These are things only someone with Moderator superpowers can do.

to CCF JamesSmith! Yes, ebay is full of them lately, I think the worst thing is that some of the copies are getting better and better. That one is an easy spot. (9)

I don't think there's much you can do beyond reporting on ebay. Posting here and getting other people to report as well probably wouldn't hurt.

NOBODY in their right mind would try to sell a genuine '30 penny on ebay, for fear of the possibility that they would not get enough for it.

Trying to learn - how can you tell it's fake? The year looks a bit wonky but how else could you tell?

This is where the Catch 22 comes in, If I tell you all I know of the original mint security checks on line then every else including the fraudsters can see where to correct the duds This one was easy because of the shape of the 0 and the 9 in 1930 plus some other obvious details, and now the new ones are occurring with the 9 near perfect. There is no easy check but it is more time consuming than anything else. First try and get some high resolution pics of certified coins- ones you can blow up quite large, then you have to start comparing, every detail, also helps to have the coin, for checks; including in the old days drop onto hard wood surface and listen to the sound. Now this can be done by Xray or similar for metal joins. Metal analysis works if the sample is destroy-able which is not of course possible, because old forgeries are also collectible- as long as declared as such. I have tried to use metal zapper( radiation gun) tech experimentally, but the results are not accurate enough to be sure as yet. Also there was variation in composition of the 3 real ones I zapped and I can't tell if it is zapper variations, or the actual coin metal variations. If you have a particular one you want a opinion on I would look at a high res scans- both sides and let you know what I think, and or what level of certainty I have, that is if you want to email it to me. BUT the border line ones are the hard ones, up until now the mass produced fakes are fairly easy. It is the high $ "RARE Grade" ones that make it worth the quality forger using time to make a (black) Art work, and thus hard to pick. It has to be attention to detail -time consuming at first- that will help to pick fakes. Interesting point is that I have had people wanting hi res scans of my Royal Australian Mint Authentication letter for my coin, with out legit reason, and often anonymously - wonder why I hope you understand why I won't spill my guts on all the details but one don't want to give them a free ride.

Hi, in my books n***g(163) is either a hero if he was running up the scammer, or looser of the year with a $5000 bid if he really thought he was getting the real thing. The systemic problem is why ebay allowed the item to run when it clearly violates their policy- they can't say they were not told--as early as a week ago

I can understand jamesmith's frustrations with Catch 22. Teaching newbs how to spot fakes also teaches the forgers how to fix their mistakes, the more the forgers learn means the more that potential buyers will need to learn to spot the fakes. What happens when all the techniques that those of us are experts at are known to the forgers? Then there will be no reliable way to spot fakes and the only certain genuine coins are those with impeccable pedigrees (and slabbed by first tier graders). Currently on ebay is a gVF 1930 penny, seller states 5th or 6th finest known (and it is a beauty), not the best images though (low res) but seller states Hi res available to genuine buyers, guess the seller doesn't want to educate the Chinese. There was even an English reverse penny last week on ebay (looked genuine). Must be some sellers that are trying to contact buyers but avoiding the high auction fees. A sign of the economy (or failed rare coin companies and their would be superannuation "investments")

Hi, I also reported that last week penny to eBay(newly discovered London die) because it was also a fake but it timed out before some one was stupid enough to bid. There were obvious problems with the penny, but the most worrying fact was one of the easy give aways in the date had been sorted. I think that and this listing is why I joined this forum- to try to get people aware, or assist in verifying. As a rule of thumb newly discovered with 1930s coins ring alarm bells with me- not closed mind but alarm bells

Hi,Again, It looks like the shape of the 9 in fake 1930 chinese pennies is no longer an easy marker, gotta hit the slops with a coupla mates and scan and snarl at some newish fakes. Without beer googles the 9 looks respectable.

Hi Unicorn jamessmith has posted it ( ebay item no 251298601640). I am no expert on that year (the only year I probably will never afford) so if James says it is a fake then I will defer to him. Like James the first thing I looked at was the date (it looks good), but the colour of the coin seems a bit off. So have the Chinese gotten better than their obvious fakes and if so why risk it on an English obverse when the Indian wouldn't raise as much suspicion?
