Hello List

I'm looking at purchasing a 1895-O AU 55 Morgan that is slabbed by anacs and marked as cleaned. The coin gray sheets for $1100 in AU and $550 XF. Is there any rule of thumb as to a % drop in price on a cleaned coin.

Thanks

Judging from Heritage results (all coins referenced in ANACS slabs so the TPG premium isn't considered), Cleaned AU55's are in the $700-750 range, and original ones are around $1100. That includes Heritage's cut, so a transaction price might want to be below that.

They seem fairly commonly offered - I saw half a dozen ANACS AU55 coins in this year's transactions. In all slabs, Heritage has auctioned 36 1895-O's in the AU grades this year already.

Just so many other things to consider when discussing a cleaned coin. For example a cleaned coin that is not popularly in demand becomes rather worthless or almost so. However, since Morgans are so popular now, even cleaned ones demand a pretty decent price. Also, where you plan on buying or selling a coin is important. With ebay, anything is possible. I go to numerous coin shows and have many times purchased cleaned coins due to a slight decrease in cost. I let them sit on a kitchen window to tone them down and put them in an album. A few as a test have been sent to grading services after about a year on a window sill and came back without a cleaned notation. Note I said a few, not all. I have a 14D Lincoln Cent in about MS63 or thereabouts that was obviously cleaned and just to see what I would be offered at coin shows I was amazed that most dealers didn't care at all that it was cleaned. Just to popular a coin to care if cleaned.

Being a key, or nearly so, the 1895-O is going to retain a lot more value cleaned than a garden-variety Morgan. I'm not really surprised that this one retains more than half its' original value, but I wouldn't give you a plugged nickel if it were an 1883-O.

Cleaned or not cleaned! The real deciding factor as far as I'm concerned is it's actual appearance when 'in hand'. What does it actually look like when you are holding it. How does it look along side of the rest of your coins in a set etc. That would be the real deciding factor as to what to pay for the piece.

Personally, I don't really care if a coin is cleaned or not. Value wise, it's always better to get something uncleaned, but if I see a cleaned coin that is bright and white, and it looks MS, then I don't mind it. I used to think that it was bad, but after seeing how many nice cleaned coins that are out there, I have changed my mind.

"Cleaned" is also a very inclusive word and the difference between cleaning agents/methods can be astronomical. Given two identical coins, one cleaned by soaking in Acetone and one cleaned by scrubbing with a toothbrush dipped in Ajax; obviously the values would differ.

I agree with OldDan, it depends....

Is this the auction? If so, I can see why the coin went for so much. The cleaning is very light and there is some nice luster left.

I wouldn't mind being the owner of that coin, cleaned or not. Looks nice to me...

Yep that was the coin. Was $1008 instead of 1080.
