I picked up an upgrade Two Cent Piece and wanted to know what the CCF members thought and what PCGS had to say about it. Someone mentioned a " Cud" on the reverse going across "AMER"ica (Reverse Retained Cud variety TCC-1865-7R). It looks like a die crack to me, but...  Kinda hard to tell with the "tone" of the coin. Is that white dot a picture error or is it on the coin itself? (right picture)

I'll go with MS63BN. That " Cud" looks like a die break to me too. Edited by supgog

I'll say MS64BN and the 2 center's are in my top five of most beautiful coins. What a beauty and I'm jealous !

I'd say MS65BN I could see a MS64 also there are a few ticks on the horizontal lines on the shield, it's very well struck up. The little white spot is a piece of fluff I'd assume that got inside the slab during the slabbing process. There is a nice die crack on the reverse and a small Retained Cud as well, the Retained Cuds are really going for large premiums on ebay lately. I've seen a few in VG-F sell for over $120.00 in the past month. I'm going to edit my answer before oih82w8 posts the grade to MS64BN I was looking on my little iPhone screen when I first saw this post. Stike is really full though, but too many little ticks to make a solid 65 grade IMO now I see it on a bigger screen. Great looking minor variety/error coin oih82w8! Looks like my link no longer works because I just bought the coin. I'll shoot some photos of it or ask them to send me their photos it was not as nice looking as this oih82w8's example, more red, but a bunch of carbon spots and not pretty at all. I have a low grade example of this Cud but then I saw your's googled the Cud number their website poped up and I had to have it! LOL. The one I purchased is in a PCGS holder MS63RB "Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R. Feldman - "And read it" - Me 2013! westcoin, I saw the one you were referring to (in cache mode) but could not get close-ups or the reverse. I thought that this would warrant a Red Brown as well, but...I bought the coin, the slab & opinion just happens to comes along with it.  Edited by oih82w8

Still think this one is at least a MS64BN maybe not 65 but I can't see RB on it. Sure is much nicer than the one I bought last night at MS63RB. You done good mate!

Here is the one I purchased it is in a PCGS holder MS63BN not RB as I wrote earlier. (sorry). I think oih82w8's piece is nicer looking! I have a bit more red luster still present but his is overall more pleasing to look at, as mine is more spotty. Note: These are the photos from the seller and I did not take them, he was kind enough to send them to me, coin is not in hand yet but has been shipped!     A matched pair  The close up photo shows the Retained Cud quite nicely. There certainly is a die crack, the Retained Cud is the part where the die crack split off into two cracks then a chunk fell out of the die leaving a void or area that filled in with metal (leaving the rectangular chunk).  westcoin, these two were not too far from each other coming off the press  . Thanks for the close-ups, and I can definately see the " Cud" along with the die crack. Mine is on it's way and I will post some better (hopefully) images upon arrival. I don't know what the threshold is between BN and RB with coppers, but I would also agree that these should be RB. But I feel the TPGs are pretty tight on giving out RB and RD designations as the coins tend to turn to full BN within a couple of years if not stored properly. I've had a few due that even stored okay. This is why the TPGs also will not guarantee copper grades only the authenticity. They can degrade fast if exposed to humidity and high temperatures. Always keep your copper coins in the dark if possible in low humidity controlled enviroment, even the coins in slabs! "Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R.
