My grandfather (from India) gave my father this coin a when he was young, and now my dad gave it to me. I tried to find out the time period and value of this coin, but I had no luck. I was wondering if any of you could help!
Thanks in advance!

One of the famous "octopus man" coins - 13th century Sri lanka from the Chola dynasty.

They are reasonably common - only worth a few pounds I'm afraid - but interesting coins none the less

Dear Bacchus,
May I tell you that this is actually of Rajaraja chola (985-1015 AD). The Chola dynasty was in India, centred at Uraiyur in Tamilnad. Later, they had marital relation with Chalukyas of central India. Thus there is another Rajaraja, his grand-son who ruled as a Chalukya king. There is a custom of giving the name of the grand-father to the grand-son in this part of India.Hence the same name. Similar looking Ceylon coins have come up in the later centuries from rulers like Parakrama bahu, Vijaya bahu, Leelavati,Sahasamalla etc.But this picture is surely of a Rajaraja Chola issue.
