After sitting on the sidelines and watching, I figured I'd put in my Two Cents... The shape of the numbers in the date look funny to me as well, especially the 8 & 6 as already stated... although they all look "off". Since buddy16cat only paid $7.50 for this one and a couple others, why bother trying to get a refund? In my opinion, it definitely wouldn't be worth the effort or time. One can look at this as a learning experience which is MUCH more valuable that the price paid for the IHC.

I hope this is seen less as a bummer, and more as something we should all watch out for. $7.50 isn't a terribly expensive mistake; I've made far worse. I'm more concerned that counterfeits of classic US coins will get so prevalent that collectors may get burned and give up. We will have to become specialists in what we collect.

I actually agree, this coin is fake. I filed a Paypal case and requested a refund. As I stated earlier, I actually wasn't obligated to pay for these coins since I already filed a not received case because of delivery issues due to the way he folded the shipping label in half. I thought I would Paypal him the money and do the right thing when the arrived a few weeks later. I hate to file another case against him but did, fake is fake and those are not permitted on ebay but sure he didn't realize it. He stated in his ad that he can guarantee authenticity and this is not authentic. He claims to be new to ebay, but you are allowed multiple accounts so I always question this. It would certainly be better if he just refunded me the money than have me leave him negative feedback. First a problem with delivery and then the coin turned out to be counterfeit, stuff I certainly wouldn't want a reputation for. I think it is worth the trouble to ask for a refund since it was easy to do. I do leave negative feedback when it is justly deserved.

No that was me, getting confirmations from other boards. I posted here first but checked other boards to see what they had to say. I didn't want to post a leading question like "is this coin fake?".

LOL! I did not even look to see it was posted yesterday. I just saw your registered date of 2012....thought this one had been passed around.

I just got refunded by the seller when I requested it. I subtracted $1 from the refund I requested for the cull looking 1884 and 1895 coins. So I didn't have to pay for the counterfeit. What should I do with it? I can't sell it on ebay, selling counterfeits is not permitted. I guess I will keep it as a reminder to take a good look at dates of better date coins like this. At least it is one less fake be passed to the next victim.

If you belong to a coin club, you could educate the other members. That is what I would do. There are also collectors who look for counterfeits for their collection. I remember seeing somebody on the CCF a while back that does. Maybe someone like that would want it...

Right, nothing wrong with selling a fake if the buyer knows the coin is fake. It is just when they pass it off as genuine it is a problem.

Quote: What should I do with it? If it were mine I'd give it to Steve Caruso and have it put in "The Black Cabinet"

Keep it or give it to somebody who will study the heck out of it and post the results here. I won't rest as an IHC collector until I can detect these fakes by their best details--not just the blundered date area.

With all the discussions pointing out the difference in the dates on these chinese coins it's just a matter of time before they get them right.....

I know this discussion is based primarily on principle, but WOW, you went through a lot of trouble for 7 bucks!

^^^Not really, just took a couple seconds to request a refund through Paypal. Of course by finding out about it I did avoid passing it to the next victim if I decided to flip. I posted it because I was wondering why it was not brown. Coppers that old should be some sort of brown.
