Definitely a Chinese fake doctored and perhaps buried to make it looked "aged". Hey, $7 is $7.

I am wondering about what someone posted about there being two types of dates in 1876 Indian Head cents: "Back in the 1960s Hewitt published a booklet that was a reprint from the "Numismatic Scrapbook" magazine that was about Indian cent Date Varieties by Otto C. Steinberger. For what it's worth he stated that there were two date varieties of 1876 cents. I wish there were photos of these varieties in the booklet, but there are none. "

I've opened up my Snow guide for 1876, which is the best catalog for IHC varieties. There is only one date style for 1876. In fact, two styles for one year is uncommon. 1865 and 1873 are the only two I know off-hand.

Looking at the 1876 on this thread it looks sanded and soldered. I am wondering if it was an actual Indian head where the date was altered. Here is a 1906 and I can see how you could change things with soldering gun to remember a 1876.

Someone could change the date, but the position of the feathers would be in the wrong place. Check the position of the last feather on the 1876 posted to this thread--it falls between the IC in AMERICA. In the past, some IHC fakes didn't get that right either.

I was already refunded the money from the seller, minus a dollar for a couple common coins. First he refunded because of issues with delivery and I repaid him minus the shipping when they were delivered. He then refunded me what I requested the fake so I left him positive feedback at least. The link to the auction is here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/indian-head...p=true&rt=nc

Wow, what an interesting discussion! Unfortunately it seems that the Chinese are taking the fun out of the hobby. That's a lot of grief for $7. Time best spent doing something else. I would destroy it and throw it out. When I was in China a read a story about a guy who went to jail for printing and selling fake communist party manuals. Obviously some party members were buying the knockoffs of their own party's work!

Counterfeiting is an inherent part of the hobby which we'll never be able to eradicate. So, the best thing to do about it is to disseminate as much information as possible - study and publicize the fakes - in order to better educate collectors.

I am going to keep the coin and have it in a holder clearly marked that it is fake. It is a good reference.
