Over the past two weeks I have found myself getting more and more addicted to obtaining coins for various reasons from their metal content, investment reasons, and their beauty. I used to have a small collection of wheats and a few other things but I was never really crazy about coin collecting. Maybe it's because I'm a little older now but I really am starting to go crazy over coins. In the past two weeks I've went from having practically nothing to having about 5oz worth of silver coins and a few other things. My silver coins consist of 2 American eagles, one a 2009 ms69 early release, one 2007 gem uncirculated early release, two 64 Kennedy's, 66 Kennedy, 4 silver quarters, 8 silver dimes, and a 1926s Peace dollar which I just picked up today. I've paid a little over or right at spot for all of it with the exceptions of the Kennedy's which I got at face value through work which was a big plus and made my day. I also have a few other coins from around the world. If I keep up at this rate I should have a good bit of silver as well as some pretty cool coins rather quickly. I just wish I would have caught the bug like 5 years ago cause my collection would probably be huge since I use to make a lot more money then I currently am making, but I guess everything happens for a reason and I'm glad I've been bitten by the coin bug now rather then in 5 more years.

Try to focus - it's good to have a smattering, but a theme (whatever your main interest might be) is good. I don't have much compared to many on this forum, but my ASE proof collection is complete (save the 95W). Along with proof sets from 1950 to date - and a few other choice sets . . . it def can be addicting & there's worse out there!

I know the feeling! I too recently got back into the hobby. When I was a kid I was series/date collector, but as adult that seems boring...they're all identical except for the date. I decided to work on a type set, which has also satisfied my desire to collect some gold coins as well.

It's a good addiction to have!
The main thing is to learn all you can before investing in a set and try to focus on what you want. You'll get it all eventually but not all at once.

I've been collecting for five or six years but it was really this year when I picked it up seriously and joined all the clubs and communities.

Quote: The main thing is to learn all you can before investing in a set and try to focus on what you want. This is good and simple advice right here. I started out when I was about 9 years old and wanted a date set of Lincoln wheat cents. Then I realized there are other coins out there too so I started keeping anything and everything I saw that I thought was old. Well, as a kid, that means anything older than I was, and also as a kid, my resources were slim to none. I kept with it though, but used the time to learn more about collecting and what to look for and what kinds of things I could get (date sets, year and mint marks, commemoratives, proofs, etc.) I think I am a much wiser collector having focused on one thing and taken the time to learn about it. Of course, now that my resources (financially and opportunity-wise) have expanded, so has my collection.

I've been colleting off and on for the past 40 years. I still have my Lincoln Cent 1941-1974 book that I started with. You might find that you will go through different phases of what interest you like I have.

I'm sticking mainly to US silver coins, pennies, and bullion coins but if I see something that catches my eye ill probably pick that up as well.

Just picked up two Kennedy's a 52 and 54 Kennedy, a 1950 Canadian quarter, 4 wheat pennies the oldest being a 1919, a few nickels oldest being 1940, and about 70 cents worth of pre 82 pennies.

I just went through my rolls of 1960s and 1970s cents and put about $6.50 back into rolls to cash in. I decided to only keep ones with nice luster or good details, and stop saving every single cent I find with a '60's or '70's date on it.

I can relate! I've always had a passing interest in coins but I inherited a meager collection in January and have been rabid since, can't stop buying silver coins. If I go a week without a purchase I start getting shakes, sweaty and very irritable. So I either go to a LCS or buy something off ebay, even if it's just a dime. Just knowing something is coming in the mail really soothes the symptoms that occur from silver addiction. Rick

I meant a 52 and 54 Franklin by the way. Yeah I've really added to my collection over the past couple weeks and am still looking for anything cool or made of silve.

I completely agree about how collecting silver can be well addicting! I'm in my early 30's only started collecting last may and I have both the ASE proof andBurnished and the regular ASE in all the years(except 2, the 95W proof and the 08w/reverse of 07) other then those I have every single other one. Most are graded and many are PF or MS 70. On top of that I have 15 of the 5 oz ATB pucks about $50 worth of 90% silver Kennedy's and Franklin's. I have the whole silver Roosevelt dime series. And some silver maples and Kooks(about 20 each) if I don't have a problem then no one does, lots of Morgan's too. So I did all that in 14 months and I don't see any problem at all..LOL!!

WTG flex, getting that many 70 Eagles is quite an accomplishment. Good luck on filling out the set.
