This look like an obvious fake mint mark to me. Perhaps more knowledgeable Lincoln Penny experts can weigh in.

The dark circle immediately around the S mint mark does look a bit suspicious, but I'm no expert either.

However, the seller has stellar feedback and a ton of it. With a record like that, I'm sure if it were a phony, he'd make it right to the buyer (no, it's not me).

It's fine, that's the correct style as best as I can tell from the given pictures.

Who would spend hours doctoring a low-grade coin anyway? LOL

But what about the location? The mint mark is so far down and to the right. Was that common. I'm not a wheatie expert.

I can get a 1909 Wheat penny for $3.35 and free shipping on ebay. If adding an "S" mint mark makes it worth $100, someone could spend quite a few hours and make it worthwhile.

I've seen the same sort of thing in stamps. It's the stamps in the $50 to $100 range that get faked the most because many buyers just accept them and place them in their album. The $1000 stamps (and coins) are more likely to be sent in for a cert, so faking them is not as lucrative. For the sellers of the $50 to $100 fake stamps, they just apologize profusely, say they can't BELIEVE they missed that, and refund ALL your money including shipping back to them. If at least half the buyers keep the item and the ones that return it are happy with a full refund, you can maintain 100% feedback.

Why do it to a low-grade coin? To keep the purchase price in the $50 to $100 range.

The style does not look like an obvious fake from the picture. What I see is a coin I would not touch due to environmental damage i.e. corrosion and that includes the area around the mintmark.

If it helps larsdog, here's a link with some info on mine that almost looks like the same mint mark position. I looked around a lot and several other examples online of specimens with the same approximate position as well.
