The other day someone showed me a blue Whitman for large cents.... almost completely filled..
Most of the coins were in Good condition... I don't really collect large cents so I didn't know a fair offer... They said they would give me a few days to think on it...
What would you give as a fair offer... ?

Unless anything looked especially bright and shiney or special like 1891 small date, I would pay $5 each for the Victorian Cents (excluding 1858 if it is there) and $1 each for the Edwards and Georges. Of course that is sight unseen.

Large cents can be an interesting set to collect, especially the Victorian years. Depending on your definition of good, most of the value will be found in the Victorian coins. 1901 and earlier, except the 1907H. There are a lot of varieties to collect in the early years. But it is important to know what dates are missing. The 1859 repunched and re-engraved dates can be valuable, but be careful because a lot of people fill those holes with regular 1859. A regular 1859 is only worth a couple of bucks in average condition. So, back to DBM,s comment, what coins are missing? and what are the grades like?

Thanks... When I say they're in good condition.... http://www.coinoisseur.com/GradingCoins.htmlTo give an understanding as to what I consider good.. like G4 to F 12... I don't collect large cents... although I like 'em... I've made more of a decision to go for quality these days than quantity and just pick one or two pieces a year to help complete my current collections. This person and I would consider them a friend came to me... so I wanted to see what was a fair reasonable offer.. I had looked at coinscanada web site after the fact, but to me there's also something to be said about getting it all in one set. I personally like looking for one coin at a time, the thrill of the hunt.. but I know sometimes when just starting a new collection it's sometimes better to get a bunch and then build up from there...improving on what you have. Thanks for the input the $5 for the Vic's and $1 each the others was close to what I was thinking

Just another tip on the 59's. Even the "vanilla" ones are valuable to those doing die tracking

@ Shaft I think he is. Same numbers I was going to put out as well. Those numbers are ebay numbers over the past year.
