MS62 or 63 likely from this coin, need better (sharper) and closer photos or larger photos to really nail down a grade. Looks uncirculated mid range from what I can tell from your photos.

If you don't mind me asking, could you post clearer pictures of both the obverse and reverse? The reason I ask is the reverse looks a bit unusual to me. The rim from about 9-12 o'clock has a kinda saw tooth appearance and the lettering has a rounded look. The coin looks MS from the pictures.

railroad rim? Is that a die crack running through the F of OF on the reverse? A lot going on with this coin. Defintely need clear big photos!

Well, I ended up submitting this coin to anacs and the results were....."not genuine, struck copy" very disappointed and shocked! I had very high hopes for this coin! I had 4 dealers check this coin out and they all drooled over it....is it possible that anacs maybe wrong? First time using anacs, I know they are ranked a step down from pcgs and ngc but I would think they are still extremely reputable regardless..thoughts/input!?!?

All 4 of the major TPG's are pretty good at authentication so if ANACS says it is fake, it very likely is. I originally thought counterfeit was a possibility due to the rounded letters and odd rims which did not look like other genuine coins but I did not feel I could really call it either way without further evidence from additional pictures.

I was actually going to say I think this is a counterfeit. Gold dollars are heavily counterfeited.

ANACS is not wrong, the coin looks to be made of brass, color is way off. It's authenticity has been confirmed by ANACS as a struck copy and one look at the reverse letters/color will tell you why. Sorry about the misfortune.

skylight, I invested heavily into old gold over the course of 2013. I bought a pair of calipers, a digital scale and studied as many genuine examples as I could find. At this point, I am more confident in my abilities to spot fakes and protect myself.
I would suggest the calipers and scale as a start.
and I know I might sound like I am only stating the following in retrospect but the coin pictured looked like a cast copy as soon as I saw it so no, ANACS does not have it wrong. I'm surprised the local dealers held this coin and did not see it was a cast copy.
My last suggestion is to purchase even "details" graded gold to A) save money but more importantly, B) learn what an in-hand cleaned yet genuine piece of old gold looks and feels like.
sorry this one did not work out for you.

Thanks for the input everybody..I will most definitely be very careful and do a bit more research before purchasing old gold. Ill consider it to be a learning experience rather than a loss.
