Picked this up a few months ago. It has obviously been chemically cleaned(bright orangish color). My question, is there a way to speed up "natural" toning? I do not want to use anything like Dellars. It has been on a window sill for a couple months. I bought this to experiment so please do not tell me to leave it alone.

have you thought about making it a pocket piece? That seems to work.

I heard if you put cleaned old copper in a window sill
on a piece of Oak, it tones it pretty well.
Never tried and this coin would be a perfect candidate.

I did an experiment like Vermontensium mentioned and they tone surprisingly quick. I just turned them every Friday to get both sides.

How natural does the toning look, and to what color did it tone? Brown?

I took a post and pre 82 Lincoln and stripped em with my secret toothpaste lol. I then set em on the window sill like I had learned from Justcarl just to see if it really worked. I did it for a month or two, I can't remember now how long it was. They will turn brown, I was surprised but Carl was right. It starts to look very natural and if I would've had a bit more patience they probably would've gone totally brown.

Put it in your undergarment, down you know where. Will tone quickly and beautifully, especially during these warm days.

While Kens suggestion is interesting. She will stay on the sill for a long while.

OK so I have have issues. I do however consider this process natural toning since it is in contact with your body, albeit speed up a bit, not some artificial chemical. Even the illustrious Sheldon (70 point scale fame) writes about this method in his book Penny Whimsy.

To darken copper fast you need something with sulfur in it. I believe yellow coin envelopes have a tiny bit which will turn coins brown very slowly. You could also try a coin darkener, or "liver of sulfur" to jump start the darkening process. You should definitely practice on some crappy coins before you work on that large cent.
If you live in a hot area you might want to try leaving the penny in your car. A penny fell to the side of my seat a few month ago and every time I opened my door I would see it. I heard about this method before so I just left it there. The center of the coin has turned brown and the edges still have some luster left. Hope that gives you some ideas.
