My grandpa has moved in with me and my family and he is letting me look through his coins. He had a really old penny roll wrapped up that had 15 memorial cents and 35 wheat cents. The memorials were all between 1959 and 1961! The wheats were mostly 40's 50's with several from the teens and twenties.

Man, that would have been a blast to look through! Were the memorial cents au/bu?

Nice. It's great that you both have an appreciation for coins. Maybe you could spend an afternoon together putting his coins in 2X2's.

Most of the Memorials are BU. Some lost their luster but do not appear to have been circulated. I just did another partial roll that was two-thirds Memorial, one-third Wheat - the newest cent is 1964.

All of his coins are unorganized - dozens of random jars and small containers of random coins. He is allowing me to sort through the Wheats and I'm going to sort those for him. He has a handful of teens and twenties with S an D mintmarks.

Sounds fun!
I really enjoy looking through relatives' change bins. My aunt had about 1000 pennies in a jar, where I found 3 1919 (1 s mint) and 1 1920, and a couple 30s. My uncle had a large tin of mixed change as well, found 2 1954-d dimes in that.

I can't wait to give all the coins I have been stashing and rolling up to my grandchildren in like 40 or 50 years before I am about to bite the big one.... They'll be like wow look at that, 50+ rolls of 2009D nickels all AU-BU condition... Lets go buy some candy with them lol

Thats great to hear! I was actually gifted a 1.5 gallon ice cream bucket 3/4 full of pennies, earlier today. The cool thing is it had been sitting in a closet in a 2nd grade classroom since 1994 (my mom just retired). All dates 1959-1993. No gems, but a great copper to zinc ratio :) ... would have rather had your most wheat roll though!

wulffy11, Make sure to look for errors and varieties. Also make sure to attach a note about these coins coming from your grandpa for future family members to know about. John1

Or give it to the one who's started his/her own collection ;) Then all the other ones will want a "fair share of the money"
