This is a Civil War hard Times token I picked up recently.

Is this sucker Green? I'm afraid it has a nasty case of verdigris but I'm not sure. If so I need to get me some Acetone and try that stuff out.

The Flag of Our Nation

If Anybody Attempts to Tear It Down

Shot Him On The Spot

I absolutely love the text on the coin but I forgot to ask...

What does DIX mean? 509? Fort Dix?

From the picture it doesn't look that green to me. Might just be a little dirt. I would leave it alone, it is very nice.

If it were my token I would use a soft cotton bud and carefull try and clean that off. The Green adds no value to the token.

Dix... On French coins, Dix is the word "Ten"... But I doubt that was the intension of the word on this token.

Could it be a reference to Dixie, the south? 1863 is around the start of the civil war and this Union token has the words "Shoot Him On The Spot" around the word DIX almost like a bullseye.

It is a quote attributed to John Adams Dix, the namesake of Fort Dix in New Jersey. Dix was Pres. Buchanan's Secretary of Treasury in 1861 in the days leading up to the Civil War. As SoT, he sent a dispatch to Treasury agents in New Orleans ordering that: "If any one attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot."

The message was intercepted by Confederate forces and never arrived in New Orleans but the contents of the message eventually found its way into North and South newspapers. As word of his actions spread, the quote became a Union rallying cry. That action made Dix one of the first Union heroes of the Civil War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Pres. Lincoln appointed him as a major general in the New York Militia.

Did you happen to purchase it on ebay from our fellow member DCarr (specie-man)?

I did!

I had no idea that was DCarr. Maybe I should have asked for a friends and family discount.

Looks like just dirt to me. Verdigris is more like a open green sore and a brighter shade of green. This looks stable and the surfaces do not look disturbed, although there could be some pitting underneath the dirt. So it may not look better cleaned. I would still probably leave it alone but keep an eye it to check if there is any progression after several months.

If you want to clean it, you could try dabbing it gently with light olive oil, using a cotton swab or soft nylon artist's brush. Give the oil a minute or two to soak in, then blot the excess oil off gently with a soft paper napkin between your thumb and forefinger. Set it aside for a while (several hours or overnight is best), letting it dry on a napkin. Then decide if you want to keep going with another round of the same treatment. Don't hurry, you can repeat the process several (many) times until the dirt is gone.

very interesting token and a great story to back it up. well done. Now I need to look up hard times tokens in general to find out about them. You just never stop finding intersting avenues to explore in this hobby.

I recently received a hard times token, and didn't know what it was until it was identified on this forum.

Grace, I must have one. Where did you find it and are there anymore. I'm on my way to ebay right now but would love any input on where you find one of the same design as your. Great find!
