I always find myself pondering new and thrifty ways to get coins. I'd like to hear your thoughts and maybe get a collective brainstorm going here. Besides coin roll hunting, here are a few I have thought of, read about, or tried.
Change machines by vending machines Glancing in the till at stores to look for anything unusual Looking inside old cars or furniture that has been sitting Of course the give and penny take a penny
I think more ideas would benefit us all!

I have gotten some coins from a co-worker. She doesn't collect coins, and had me look at a handful of coins she found while cleaning up her house. I made her a decent offer, and she actually took less.

I haven't dug anything old or rare (oldest: 1952 penny), but I have found some silver jewelery - and loonies and toonies.
It's probably different in the UK, but my town was only incorporated in 1904.

Theres nothing old in Canada! My town's earliest mention is the time we had The Royal Mint in Saxon times but we have roman relics turn up every once in a while and our recreation ground is littered with knapped flint. But a lot of people turn up to churn out the fields, so theres not much left, unfortunately.

I've found laundromats to be a great source for quarters... people place quarters from all over the place in those machines, owner dumps them in the change machines, I get $20 worth, repeat next week :) I have found better quarters with that method than rolls. The only ones I'm after are older Washington's. Bank rolls seem to give me State Quarters or the older ones are mangled. Better quality older Washington's in the machine. At least in my experience. On a side note, I wish I did this back in the 80's in arcades when machines actually took quarters, not tokens or plastic cards :)

Get on your tippy toes and look on top of vending machines, you'll find pennies that people put up there as they're going through their pockets for change.

Yard sale are a good source of foreign coins. Many families just want to get rid of foreign coins because they do not know what else to do with them.

I pay cash for everything in the course of a typical day, but I rarely spend coins. If I buy a cup of coffee that costs $2.10, I'll pay with three singles. More coins to look at!

If you only had the money to get a laundromat. One person I met at one that owned the place told me every night he goes home and dumps piles of change on a table and his entire family looks through it all for either Silver coins or just old ones. He then takes them all to a coin store once a week and makes a real pile of money. Oddly enough, none of his family are coin collectors.

I've got a friend who own a dollar store, I gave him a list of the coins and dates I'm looking for.

"Marv the Sticky Bandit" had a halfway decent idea; had something to do with duct tape and kettles.

I find plenty of 100 Won coins from my Korean friends. They are almost the exact size of a Canadian quarter and have the same type of edge.
Other close relatives to the quarter? I think 5 Roubles will be accepted by vending machines and is only worth 15 cents - and the old Icelandic 5 Aurar coin is also a nearly-perfect slug (1/20th of the sub-cent kronur is cheap! But the coins have some collector value).
